It's that rare kind of celebrity death that doesn't just affect one particular fandom. Millions of people, people who are into all sorts of other things, watch the show on a casual basis, and he snuck his way into being part of the household.

I dreamed of being on the show but I knew it would never happen, because I'm abysmal at trivia. But most of the people I talk to regularly either had real aspirations of playing someday or actually had competed before, and there was a huge nexus of sentiment. I honestly thought I would cry a lot more than I did. Maybe I will when his last episode airs. It doesn't fully sink in when he's still there on TV.

Suicide bombings and attacks were common terrorist tactics in the 80s when the book was written. 9/11 was just the curve-busting biggest.

I'm really open to different styles, byt wow that really is ugly. Like, intentionally so. You have to put thought into it to make it that ugly, it's like it's own aesthetic.

This isn't even me hating it, just, this genuinely looks like the artist was going for an "ugly" look. I'm intrigued.

None of the main three really were the same people as the originals; the new Kirk was a fratboy caricature of the original one, Spock was a raging asshole (the fistfight with "Khan", seriously?) and Bones was a lot rougher. I hate having to go through these fics too.

But I guess every fandom with several canons has the same issues.

Like, Diskworld is more fun, better written, politically insightful, and has more stuff. What it doesn't have is the "nerd from the suburbs saves the world from great evil" text.
