I'm really open to different styles, byt wow that really is ugly. Like, intentionally so. You have to put thought into it to make it that ugly, it's like it's own aesthetic.

This isn't even me hating it, just, this genuinely looks like the artist was going for an "ugly" look. I'm intrigued.

Yeah, I've seen some excellent western style art. This really feels like some of those drawings where it's intentionally ugly, like some illustrations of Dahl's kids' books.

Where are you hanging out that all the western fanart is categorically bad? (and I assume when you say the Japanese fanart is better, you mean it's not stylized in a way you find unattractive) I admit I don't follow the big anime fandoms of today myself, but I see plenty of pretty western fanart in the fandoms I DO follow, and conversely find both appealing and unappealing fanart on Pixiv.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope this is not an example of the good fan art...

(Anonymous) 2020-11-14 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There is some nice western fanart in most of the book fandoms in my opinion, but for non-westerm media I agree. For western live-action and cartoons it's usually 50/50 for me.

I don't quite get it. I've seen some good western anime art. Actually, I've seen some gorgeous Russian anime art - does that count?

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
ok but unironically, Russian artists tend to be the best.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh this is one of those artists whose entire shtick is diversity but they have no idea how to draw diverse features in a way that's remotely appealing.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
This was my first thought too. That is one fugly picture.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is unfortunately full of it.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Goddamn, that is some ugly fanart.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks entirely deliberate, though - everything is drawn well, just ugly!

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Everything is absolutely not drawn well, just because they managed to get most of the features on there doesn't earn it a gold star. We ain't talking Picasso here bud, just bad art.

Honestly, 100%. I just saw a bunch of images about sexy Kernel McChicken (idk his name, the KFC guy) and it reminded me instantly of what I've been missing out on since drifting away from Japanese media. Like so much of the art/work is so masterful.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
So true. I recently got into a pairing in one of my fandoms that's popular on the Japanese side, so it's just a non-stop stream of gorgeous fanart and I couldn't be happier. Even the stuff that the artists call "garbage sketches" is lovely.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
The bits of food in the open mouth is what's really bugging me about this picture, I just... I viscerally hate that part of it so much. Yuck.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
ignoring the absolutely hideous art i'm not sure i'm following the argument here. people should forgo their own personal tastes in characters/ships just because the japanese art is better? or the japanese opinion is the 'correct' one every should adhere to because the material comes form there?

i mean you can believe that i guess but i'm not going to agree with it, people are going to like what they do regardless of other fans input. that's kind of how subjective taste works.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, entitled much? So you're basically saying that Western fans can't like different ships/characters to Japanese fans because it means you get less pretty fan art when they do.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I read it as "do yourself a favor and TRY to like the Japanese-favored pairing more, because then you will get better fan art to look at." Obviously you can't help what you like.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even tell what that's supposed to be. Holy shit. Human MLP characters, maybe? But Jesus Christ it's hideous. And you just know they're patting themselves on the ass for being so brave and ~unique~ by drawing things so unattractively. Bleh.

In any case, I feel you. While there's a lot of truly excellent Western artists for anime/jrpgs/etc., there's also just as many that do this, and it's simply not something Japanese fandom does. It's safer, lol.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think I figured it out! It's Kill La Kill characters: Mako, Ryuko, Satsuki, and Nonon. Satsuki and Nonon look WAY different from how they look in canon, though.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I find I don't like a lot of Western fanart because for some reason the artists feel the need to super stylize it like that and I don't want that.

I'm looking for fanart because I want art of the characters looking like their canon selves. If they look totally different (and I'm not talking about stuff like the artist drawing the characters in their own personal style where they're still clearly recognizable as those characters, just with the artist's individual spin on their designs), then it's not really FANart to me. It might as well be original stuff.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-15 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I... actually think this art is kinda cool. I get that it's very stylized and not for anyone but I like it. I find a lot of Japanese art, while like aesthetically pretty, rather bland. Different strokes and all I suppose.
