Poverty. It hits too close to home in regards to how I grew up. Reading Angela's Ashes in high school was awful for me.

Yeah, there's always certain themes that hit a little too close and I'm just like NOPE. No thank you.

I've mentioned it a few times here already and at this point I'm admittedly beating a dead horse over it but these days I'm just so hyper aware of how much I dislike cutesy fluff in horror fandoms - and it feels like it's becoming more and more common.

Aw, I love flat out horror, but I also love like... slice of life type stuff mixed in with zombies, like Married With Zombies etc.

Characters in friendships or relationships with their bullies. Hits a little too close to home.

Bully teachers who are justified in fic. Again hits too close to home.

Animal abuse. Just no.

Extreme anti-heroes who aren't really heroic at all and are on the side of "good" for basically selfish reasons. Just not interested.

OOC stuff in general where the canon characters are unrecognizable.

Strict gender roles just accepted and conformed to by everyone.

Characters becoming completely different in a relationship than they are in their regular personality. Especially female characters who suddenly become a stereotype when they are written in a romance.

What if it's well written? Like you can see the organic development of the relationship?

"Modern AU" that turns fantasy/sci-fi characters with fantasy/sci-fi abilities into just regular people who meet in regular ways and fall in love, especially when their abilities play a pretty huge role in their lives in the canon and are kind of integral to their personalities. So they wind up just being characters who have the same names as these other characters and otherwise don't have anything much in common and these two ordinary people have a totally ordinary romance.

Actually "ordinary romance" is of no interest to me in general. Especially when it ends in pregnancy/children (mpreg or otherwise). I know lots of people do like that kind of thing so I'm not gonna hate on it, that's just the absolute last thing I personally want to read in my fandoms that do not already take place in a modern, realistic setting.

Hard same.

If I'm into a setting with magic/powers then I don't see the appeal in removing that for a run-of-the-mill normal-person AU where the only thing they have in common with their canon-selves is the names. To me they don't even feel like the actual characters they're supposed to be either, just OC's with the canon-names slapped on to get more clicks.

I don't mind most themes, as long as they're written well. I'll even accept a "but faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamily" theme if they show a person trying hard to make it work but realizing that some families are just shit. Nothing irritates me more than lazy writing.

Break-ups. I don't care if they get back together in the same story, just nope. I'd rather read about one or both dying.

Yeah, I hate break-ups in fic too. If I ship it, I'm not interested in seeing them break-up. I'm one of those diehard OTP shippers who is like, "They're it for each other. They're all-in." I have no problem with them struggling to communicate their feelings and get on the same page. I love angst. But when they break up--even if they subsequently get back together--I can no longer believe they're it for each other. Unless it's one of those miscommunication scenarios where they only agree to break up because they mistakenly believe the other wants to and they're trying to give the other what they want. I mean, that's a pretty belabored premise, but it is one way I could tolerate a break-up storyline.
