The Irish mob fell around 1925, so that would probably paint a target on her especially if (and this is me assuming because I suck at searching for things) that those kinds of homes were in part used as fronts and recruitment centres for gangs to profit off of. If she was presumed to be associated with the mob due to her heritage and workplace, she'd be hard pressed to convince people of her value as a worker.
Sorry, I'm just completely baffled that OP thinks it's excusable for them to act that way for literally any reason whatsoever. You can hate children and have your only option to work be in childcare, but anyone who thinks treating children like Hannigann and Trunchbull does, let alone think it a rational response is extraordinarily worrying.
