Really? I found lots of fics really lean into the found family and have lots of really tight relationships outside the pairing

Well yes, but I'm going to be honest here: I don't want to write about characters other than my ship. It's that simple.

I've actually found a lot of fanfic where the the lover and best friend are both equally important to the MC and there's no drama between the three of them. On the other hand, I read a lot of profic that can't seem to make that distinction and it annoys the hell out of me.

I think those things are one of the marks of an inexperienced and/or lazy writer, unfortunately. I don't read fics where the author can't make a good case for a pairing without bashing another character to do it. And in general, I dislike love triangles.

I think you just need to find some better fandoms. Most of mine are very big on the power of friendship.

On the one hand, I don’t want to see the friend characters bashed or ignored or written out. OTOH, my OTP is what I’m reading the fic for, so I’m not super interested in seeing the characters’ friendships with third parties given equal “screen time” to the OTP stuff.

The ideal, for me, is when the secondary characters aren’t phoned in—when they actually have solid characterization and contribute to the scenes they’re in and feel like they exist outside of the scenes they’re in—but they still remain secondary characters who support the story without taking up a ton of the focus.

This is my preference, and I feel it's a completely fair preference to have. However, if someone else prefers more of a true ensemble situation, that's also totally cool, and if another person prefers a triadic situation where A and B are best friends and B and C are the ship couple and all three are of equal weight within the story, that's also cool.

I want to agree and I do in theory but bffs to lovers is one of my fave tropes so I usually eat that up with a spoon
