I recognize Shane and Ryan from their Buzzfeed days, can someone catch me up on why people are hating on the new guy?

Shane, Ryan, and Steven Lim (from Buzzfeed's Worth It) created a company together. He made a comment a while back about being friends with people who have some....negative outlooks (homophobia, racism, that kind of thing) because he wants to try and help them change. People FREAKED OUT and dogpiled on him.

Even before that thought, Steven (and Ryan) get a lot more hate than Shane does because racism.

It's so fucking dumb, because those three are trying their best to be a positive, inclusive force on the internet.
