If I had not been a teacher, I think I would have been a writer (speech writer, specifically, or YA author).

What about you all?
What is your current career and what would have been if not for that?

It's hard to answer this because many people change careers over the course of their lives multiple times.

Currently, I'm writing email blasts, but I was trained in putting together computer networks.

Ha, I tried being a writer, but now studying to be a teacher (though mixed feelings there).

I think if I started ALL over again, I'd do something completely different. Like a blacksmith or leatherworker - interestingly there IS a market for that.

Original poster here, what are your reservations? Don't get me wrong, I love being a teacher, I just know that the desire to be one came later in life.

Many reasons, starting off with the fact that I'm really not feeling the course myself. It's partly the distance learning, but partly other things. Some things have changed in education, which I dislike. And also other things have NOT changed, which I also dislike.

But my biggest issue, I'd say that it's not really where my heart is. I've tutored before, but I think it's different. I couldn't keep doing the things I was doing before because of both mental and physical health reasons, also the economy. I basically got the opportunity to reschool myself, and went for it because it seemed silly not to, but it's not like it ever was a dream job - and I feel that maybe, to be a teacher, it should be? For me it's more a pragmatic thing.

I also have no idea if I'm actually any good at working with teenagers. I actually wanted to teach adults (but the opportunity I got was for high school teacher).

I think a lot of it will depend on how my internship goes, but it really can go either way.

I wanted to be a pediatrician when I was a kid. Then I wanted to be a psychic (lol) and now I’d like to be an author. Currently, I’m a student teacher, but I still write and would like to publish a book one day.

Eh, I'm a writer right now. Writing doesn't really pay the bills unless you can build up an editing client base.

I'd love to go back into fashion design. I mean, if I could go back and start again, I would push back against my parents more and go "are you trying to set me up for success or are you trying to control me through money?" Because I lost a lot of time going to the wrong school (tiny Christian thing and they were paying so they had conditions.)

Or, I'd go into game design. what... I .. originally wanted. Oh well.

Well, I'm unemployed, but all the paid work I've ever managed to pick up has been in kitchens. Unemployed kitchen hand? Wow, that's even sadder than just 'unemployed'.
I wanted to be a teacher, but I dropped out of uni because

Public Relations (I dunno how to say it in english) but work in something completely unrelated (administration).

Honestly, I would have loved getting into art or animation. Or any form where I can get to be creative. Sadly that doesn't pay the bills so I work in something I'm not much into. Gotta eat, they say. And I don't hate my job, but I'm not passionate about it either.

Another animation wannabe here. I'd still love to get into it, but at this point, I'm just too old.

Currently unemployed, but looking to be an immigration attorney. If I couldn't be an immigration attorney, I guess my next choice would be public defender. My strongest desire is to be plugged in where people need representation the most, to help people get access to the system. So representing people who can't afford an attorney and who wouldn't have one if I wasn't representing them would be another way of doing that.

If I wasn't an attorney at all, I'm not sure. The one thing I can think of would be something like a social worker maybe? Again a job where I could help people who need it most. Or basically any random job at a non-profit. I'd honestly be happy as a secretary at a nonprofit helping immigrants. I just want to make a difference and help people.

I'm currently in an administrative position in a steel mill. It's boring but secure.

Next September, I'm starting a two-year program to get my paralegal certification. A lawyer was one of my 'childhood dream jobs' but at this point, I think I'm too old for full law school, so I'm taking a different path into the legal world. I'd like to work in a public defender's office or for the government as opposed to a big law firm or corporation but who knows what the future holds.

I'm kind of bitter and stuck in the office setting, which is exactly where I never wanted to be. But honestly, unless my entire upbringing was different, and I was encouraged to make the proper connections (or at least allowed to) I don't think things would be better, and could possibly be worse. As much as I hate the office setting, I'm lucky to be employed at all.

I'm an energy trader.

If I was starting over, I would either work at the seaport, with logistics, or I would be a dentist!
