I think they were trying for humor, dark or whatever. And there wasn't enough in that episode to carry it. I know their official statement was "it was supposed to be funny guys, really!"

Like, okay, he ate one. You move the tank to the cockpit with the mother or strap that kid to your chest. People have been "he's not attached to this kid as a parent yet" and "he's not prepared." I don't buy it. He's attached. It means the writing is way too uneven.

The kid ate an egg of a sentient creature, feed the kid. Simple.

It just felt they did it one time too many, in an episode way too light of plot and could have been cut to get to Bo-katon that much faster.

(Also, wth is up with the Republic pilots. That is NOT my Republic leaving him stranded. Yes, let's accept a bribe and leave you here on this ice cube. Ugh.)
