Vagrant Story. 20 year old PSX game somewhat connected to the Final Fantasy series.

My happy place is apparently a crumbling city full of dark magic, undead, and knights whose weapons you can steal after you beat them (some of whom are also undead). And sexy guys who don't know how to wear pants.

Well as noted, 20 years on I'm still absolutely crazy about it. Generally it got excellent reviews, considered a masterpiece by the major publications.

But also it was rather harder than many games of that era, so many people I knew back then got to the forest that was designed to get you good and lost, which did its job perhaps too well, and they gave up in frustration and watched plot tapes. Cause even if you don't like getting lost in a haunted forest, I mean, you can still enjoy the dark plot and the hot guys (and a few hot girls also!) dramatically speaking faux-Shakespearean dialogue.
