Psychology. It says yes.

The difference is in who engages their frontal lobes and suppresses that judgment.

Of course, you'd like to believe that it can be trained out of a person -- it makes you feel better about yourself to believe that -- but it just can't. Sorry. You can just get really damn good at skimming over the reaction. But hook you up to a machine that measures the muscle twitches in your face and the neuron activity in your brain and it's still there.

I like you. Your psychology makes me happy becasue it actually makes sense. ^_^

Not to say that it's okay to be all "oh, well, I have these reactions, nothing I can do about it! Might as well go be a racist, sexist ass!" You train yourself to disregard the reactions in favor of something more positive. But people who claim to have "gotten rid of them" make me laugh.

Psychology is a fun field. ;D

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! I totally agree with what you're saying. You can't "get rid" of your racist tendencies altogether, but you can teach yourself not to give into them. It's all a test of willpower and mental training.

I love psychology, my mother instilled me with a faith in the subject. ^_^

Re: 133

Exactly! And, tbh, not trying too hard and beating yourself up over it. Because if you do that, then you're going to get negative associations anyway. Just got to learn to individuate. That's the key to getting rid of stereotypes. Or... well, maybe not getting rid of them (they'll likely always be there, due to basic ingroup/outgroup behavior), but getting rid of "stereotype agreeance."

It's so delicious~ It makes it that much easier to deal with morning rush hour traffic when I just think to myself, "Yeah, he's just forgotten to turn on his frontal lobes. Poor guy."

Re: 133

[identity profile] thickets.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that it's true, but too many stupid, ignorant, fuck-faced cowards use it as an excuse to justify their behavior, their stupid jokes, etc.

Re: 133

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-03 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah -- that's the shitty part, but there's not much that can be done about those ones. Generally, they're just going to keep on doing it no matter what you tell them.

Re: 133

(Anonymous) 2009-01-04 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I find your comment hilarious. You just generalized all racists/sexists/otherwise prejudiced people to be unintelligent, lacking bravery, and ugly(? what exactly does fuck-faced mean?). Not that I don't agree with your point, but insults such as these are inherently prejudicial.

Re: 133

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
No. A sexist/racist/homophobe/whatever is biased against someone simply for what they are. Being biased against someone for being a bigot is based on what they say and do. BIG difference.

Re: 133

(Anonymous) 2009-01-03 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This. And TBH, admitting there there are biases there would probably help you with suppressing them.

There are probably some people who have the same reaction to two different races, but having exactly the same subconscious reaction to every single race that there is? Really? If there are people like that, they are in a fucking tiny minority.

admitting there there are biases there would probably help you with suppressing them.

Funny thing about that -- yes and no.

There's a thing called priming. If you're constantly, consciously trying to avoid bringing up negative stereotypes, you're that much more likely to do it when confronted with the stimulus.

Of course, you can still suppress it, but the best way to deal with stereotypes, the research shows (so far... things change at the speed of light in this field), is to actively disconfirm them, rather than focusing all of your energy on telling yourself it's "badbadwrongwrong." That is -- expose yourself to lots of examples that prove them wrong.

How the hell are muscle twitches and neuron activity indicative of racism, aka the belief that one race is superior to the other?
karel: (Default)

Re: 133

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-04 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Standard ingroup/outgroup behavior, which is what racism is, at its core. The "muscle twitches and neuron activity" are an indication of a certain level and type of arousal -- in this case, negative arousal. Things don't happen in the brain for no reason, you know.

Re: 133

(Anonymous) 2009-01-04 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's not racism though, you weirdo. Racism is a set of beliefs.

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Stop projecting.

The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

Which is exactly what those neuron signals are relaying, in the most simple way of explaining. They're relaying "eew, outsider, get away, it's harmful and will probably hurt me." And yeah, they also relay a certain amount of prejudice. So yes. They're relaying racism. The thing is that if you're a good person, you suppress that reaction because you know it's incorrect. Just the same way you suppress the reaction of "eew, that tastes icky" and take your medicine. I don't feel like running a seminar on brain activity, but those are the basics of it.

Stop projecting.

Oh, I just love this answer.

Re: 133

(Anonymous) 2009-01-04 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
No, because that's not a belief, let alone one about human character or ability. Do you know what beliefs are, dumbass?

Yes, medicine might taste icky, but that's like saying that we all inherently believe that medicine is unhealthy for us. No we do not. You are projecting.

Take it up with someone who cares.

Re: 133

Translation: I used to be a dumbass, not your typical dumbass but a racist dumbass who believed that muscle twitches indicated any sort of belief whatsoever. Thanks for schooling me anon.

No, translation: I don't feel like typing up tl;dr sections from textbooks and lecture notes for a dumb little anon who wants to believe that they're oh so perfect. Bye.
