Yu Yu Hakasho ReWatch Discussion

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Henceforth known as YYH:RW

I'm the OP from last week, so let's discuss the first three eps!

A few questions to get us started:

1. First time watching YYH or is this a rewatch?
2. What made you join the Rewatching Party?
2. Are you watching the sub or dub?
3. Thoughts on the animation?
4. Thoughts on the characters/themes/plots?

Go off, really, I don't know how moderate this, but I love discussion!

I will start by saying so far, I love this overarching theme of friendship and how it helps make life worth living.

Re: Yu Yu Hakasho ReWatch Discussion

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
1. First time watching YYH or is this a rewatch?
Rewatch. I first watched it on Toonami when the censored version aired there. I finished watching it on Adult Swim

2. What made you join the Rewatching Party?
I just really wanted to geek out about YYH with other people! I own all the seasons and I rewatch my favorites from time to time, but I haven't rewatched the show in its entirety in a long time

2. Are you watching the sub or dub?
Dubbed because I just prefer it that way

3. Thoughts on the animation?
I guess the style is a little dated since it was animated in what, the early '90s? But I like the animation and I don't have a good eye for catching bad animation unless it's really obvious

4. Thoughts on the characters/themes/plots?
I do love the theme of friendship, but I also appreciate how the show initially handled grief when Yusuke sees his everybody at his funeral and his classmates are just there because they have to be and his teachers are being assholes at his own funeral, but then you get Keiko crying and Kuwabara marching in because he's furious that Yusuke's dead, but it's clear that he's grieving the loss of his rival. And then there's the bit where Yusuke's death just suddenly hits his mom and she slowly starts to crumble. It's so sad and very well-done.

First time watching YYH or is this a rewatch?
First time! I mean I definitely remember seeing part of the first episode before, somehow, but I don't remember how, or why I didn't see more. Because I definitely didn't have any memory of MOST of the first episode.

What made you join the Rewatching Party?
It's a classic that I haven't seen, and probably should. My fiance loved it back in the day, which suggested I would have too, because we met through having remarkably similar tastes, and since then just kept introducing each other to things that we both wound up loving. XD And I am curious about a character we haven't gotten to yet that I keep getting as my result in memes.

Are you watching the sub or dub?
The sub is the only option as far as I can tell on the streaming service I finally found that WOULD stream it free. (I'm not sure if Crunchyroll removed the ability to watch it there or my computer just doesn't want to cooperate with the specific link for the specific show.)

Thoughts on the animation?
"Wow, that is some pre-2000 anime all right." By modern standards it seems so messy, but part of that is just that it was never meant to be seen in hi-res, and in a way it's refreshing. Actual hand-drawn animation. Kind of a lost art.

Thoughts on the characters/themes/plots?
Well, before the first episode was half over, I could already see why my fiance was a diehard Kuwabara fan. XD And I will, for the record, not be able to look at him with a straight face because she used to watch basketball with me and the first time she saw Blake Griffin she noted some resemblance... and now I can't NOT see it. I'm pretty sure I would've jumped RIGHT ON that Kuwabara bandwagon back in the day, especially after episode 3. (Also, all of these guys apparently being in MIDDLE SCHOOL? HAHAHAHHAHA. Oh, anime.)

Actually like Yusuke more than I expected to, since usually I find shonen anime protagonists to be my least favorite character in the entire show and just watch them for the supporting cast. But he's kind of a weird dude in that he makes no pretense of being a hero or any sort of good guy at all.

Had never even heard of Keiko before I started this watch party. Somehow given fandom, that does not surprise me. :P Interested to see more about why she put up with Yusuke (not to mention her parents apparently being okay with him?) since she actually seems nice.

Also, the nature of the egg they're using for the trial is kinda cool, and I fully expect more "Yay, I did something good!" "By beating people up?" "Er, oops." shenanigans to keep the tension high.

Anyway, definitely interested in keeping going, and not just because there is apparently a character showing up later who I will presumably find relatable. :P

Talking About Fandoms You Aren't In

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that everyone is talking about Supernatural at the moment, even people like me who watched the first couple of seasons and drifted away, and it's a bit of a trip stumbling across bits of information that are completely incomprehensible to any outsider - like mime vampires, or any mention of that one time Castiel was god for a bit.

But what are some fandoms you've unexpectedly (and perhaps unwillingly) learned something strange about?

Hades

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to play Hades at some point, but I've got several games underway at the moment and I'm spending all my money on Christmas gifts, so I'm just looking at the posts crossing my various social media feeds, and... this game is kind of horny? Not intensely horny, it's not that sort of game, but it's not just the fanbase imagining stuff again.
I came across a screenshot of one of the bosses going "my spear yearns to penetrate your soft and vulnerable flesh", and just... what the hell do you do with that???

I watched Sherlock and enjoyed it for what it was, but I was never really involved the fandom and it was only after the fourth season aired did I get swept up in all the crazy Johnlock conspiracies. Honestly, all the Supernatural conspiracies are like a rehash of all the Sherlock conspiracies and I'm getting so much deja vu. I even feel embarrassed for shipping Destiel like I felt embarrassed for shipping Johnlock because, well shit, now I can't tell anybody that or they're gonna assume I'm one of the tinhatters.

Royal fandom? I don't even know what it's called

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[cw for people being shitty about a miscarriage]

So like, I know that there are people who basically treat royals (especially the British royal family) like they're some sort of extremely long-running soap opera, and obviously someone is buying all those gossip mags with covers saying stuff like "Secret Source Reveals: Queen To Abdicate In Favour of Will!" or whatever, but I usually manage to avoid the worst of it.
Unfortunately, this morning on twitter I came across a thread of people who seemed tremendously concerned that the Duchess of Sussex was lying about having had a miscarriage. Their evidence for this was: there were some photos from that month where she was smiling.
...yeah, that's it. Well, they also seemed generally convinced she was an evil lying manipulator, but they didn't feel the need to present any evidence for that one. Oh, and they also claimed that she had made this intensely personal loss public *now* because - brace yourself - everyone was talking about Prince William's dog dying.
Did you know that Prince William's dog had died? Because I didn't! I didn't even know he had a dog at all! But according to this lot, it was international front-page news and 'MeMa' (as they referred to her) just couldn't stand someone else getting all that attention.
I made vigorous use of the block button this morning.

I have never read or watched anything Hunger Games related, but just from some stuff that someone said many years ago on my reading list here which I'm not sure is a spoiler, I am pretty positive that when I do, I will really enjoy Haymitch. Apparently he pushes several of my "favorite trope" buttons.

I don't know almost anything about the entire series other than the basic premise, that the movies contain Lenny Kravitz in gold eyeliner (enough reason to watch sometime I think), and that a lot of terrible people outed themselves as racists over a very cute little girl. But even though I don't actually know if he's a protag or antag or somewhere in between, I already am pretty sure I know my favorite character.

I have no horse in the Supernatural drama, not having seen the show since Season 5, but I do feel really bad for Misha Collins this week ala his Twitter. I can't imagine how he must feel because of all this.

I'm blown away with how much drama the Animaniacs reboot has generated in such a short time frame.Of all the things to make me question whether or not I want anything to do with online fandom anymore... people analyzing Animaniacs to hell and back wasn't on my 2020 Bingo card.

I was never in the Glee fandom, but I'm friends with a girl that was, and she was in hysterics the other day. I asked what was up, and she told me "in the year of our Lord 2020, there are still people that think that Chris Colfer and Darren Criss are secretly in a relationship and "PR" is forcing them to not be."

I don't really know who those two are, but the idea of some shadowy "PR" entity forcing two people (one who literally hasn't been in acting since the show and the other who has mostly focused on Broadway, which isn't exactly known for its homophobia) to not be in an open relationship because of... reasons... is absolute peak comedy for me. I cannot imagine that level of delusion.

I've learned all kinds of shit about Doctor Who though I've only seen a handful of episodes. I was a pretty big fan of Supernatural until like season 7 in which I gave up and after that mostly heard the downright bizarrely dumb crap that happened afterward from online or my sister, who caught up when they announced the final season.

More than anything else, tbh, when I hear something markedly strange about a show, I usually end up watching it to find out what's up.

Apparently the Doctor once tried to kill his companion and nobody likes to talk about that Doctor? Oh, and everything I know about Game of Thrones I learned from my friends and one of the strangest things they told me was “a wall fell on Cersei and killed her”.

I've only recently gotten into Attack in Titan (and by gotten into, I mean dreading fic, maybe I'll watch the show soon). Anyway, reading these fics had me believing that Erwin is the finest man this side of existence (sane applies to Levi) so imagine my shock MY SHOCK when (I play some audio clip to listen the voices) the most velvety voice comes from ....ugh. why. Why. I was misled. And now I'm mad at the English dubs because the voices for Erwin & Levi are right up my alley.

Anyway, I always thought that it was a mecha type anime and I think I heard complaints here & there so never checked it out. Apparently there's grotesque Titans hungry for human flesh. And major political intrigue (unless that's just a super potty fic I've been reading lol). Not Gundam style robo armies.

Fandom face masks anon...

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Belated thanks to everyone who gave their feedback. Ultimately, I decided to order masks from somewhere else. The anon who said the lack of info didn't inspire confidence was right... maybe somewhere on their site they have actual measurements for mask dimensions, but I couldn't find it. IMO, that info should be on every single listing. Just saying a mask is "XL" and explaining what that means by saying it'll fit "men six foot or perhaps" is... *sigh*

I don't want to badmouth anyone who's trying to make some money or help people in the pandemic, but that's simply not adequate. The most obvious problem is that your height isn't an accurate indicator of what size mask you'll need. Some tall people have skinny faces/short jaw lines, others do not. Some short people have wide faces. That's why actual physical measurements are necessary. This info shouldn't be hard to cut, because they're the ones measuring and cutting the fabric to make the masks in the first place. I also wanted to know about how many layers of fabric were sewn into the mask, what the lining looked like, etc. No photos or information on any of those things.

I just wish that people who are selling something would include all the pertinent info in the listing. It's not that difficult to figure out what people need to know, and I have no idea why anyone would shoot themselves in the foot by leaving it out.

Re: Fandom face masks anon...

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have this issue with Facebook and FB groups. Oh, you're selling a car/bike/gently used fridge? Why would you not say how much you're asking for it, ffs? Isn't that the most BASIC info you could include, aside from pictures of the damn thing? Do you WANT dozens of people PMing you to ask how much when you could've just said "I'm asking $100 OBO for this 18 cubic foot fridge" on the post in the first place?? And if you're not going to include a photo of the used couch you're trying to sell, don't bother posting until you have a decent photo. You'll be lucky to find anyone willing to take a used couch off your hands unless it's dirt cheap and they're desperate and unafraid of bed bugs, but finding someone who wants a used couch sight unseen? Good luck with that.

Sorry, this is one of my pet peeves.

Re: Fandom face masks anon...

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who is selling masks, you know, it honestly wouldn't hurt me to put the measurements in the listing so thank you anon. I will jazz up my listing showing that.

Granted, I only sell one-size-fits-most tie-ons but it can't hurt to add the measurements.

Though, for most people selling homemade masks, we're all working from a base set of less than ten universal patterns. So if they haven't been custom-sized from the beginning, they are usually one-size-fits-most because that's the patterns and tutorials we've been using. In a pinch you can probably google DIY mask patterns to have some idea of the numerical measurements most makers are using, but you also don't know WHICH of the patterns any particular maker is using. I'm using the U of Colorado Hospital pattern that was put up way back in March, e.g., but I don't say that anywhere because I'm not sure it's usually relevant.

Internet horror/creepypasta/nosleep, etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m a really easily creeped out kid (well, maybe not a kid), but for some reason every so often I get bitten by the creepypasta bug. The author I always return to is C.K. Walker, and today I went through her reddit post history and read a bunch of her stuff that I’d never seen before. I like her longer-form stories that I can play with in my head and make up happy endings. A comment on the last thread I saw mentioned that a potential crossover with another story could give it a more hopeful conclusion, and now I bet I’m going to be up all night directing that crossover in my local brain theater. Maybe it’s defeating the purpose of reading this kind of thing if all I do with it is think of how to make it less grim, but whatever. Is anyone else familiar with her work? What are some of your favorite online horror stories?

Re: Internet horror/creepypasta/nosleep, etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid creepypasta because I'm a big ol' chicken, but I do recall one story about a computer game: the general idea was it was a very simple text-based adventure game, and you started in a cabin and picked what direction you would go and the game would either a) let you do that, or b) tell you that was the wrong way and close. Oh, and you had two items - a shovel and a sack - but if you tried to use them the game just said it wasn't the right time or something. Anyway, eventually someone got the game to a point where it would let you use the items (first the shovel, to dig a hole, and then you put the sack in the hole), and the game ended. And then it gave a set of coordinates.
The internet being the internet, someone eventually went to the coordinates, and found a cabin. They followed the directions from the game (north, north, west, south, west, etc.), and came to a dead end at the same point as the game. Hoping for buried treasure, they dug. They found a sack, much decayed, wrapped around a skull.
I'm afraid I have no idea what the story's title was, though.

Did you know C.K. Walker was one of the writers on The Haunting of Hill House? As I understand it, Borrasca got Mike Flanagan's attention and he invited her to collaborate with him. I think that's so cool.

My favourite online horror story is definitely The Left-Right Game. It's probably the only one I actively seek out to re-read on a regular basis.
