Update from Depressed/unable to write fanfic anon

So I decided to drop school because I was doing badly and so overwhelmed.

Today I'm feeling better than I have in a whole damn month. I'm even working on something original. I'm still planning to keep up with my doctors and possibly get therapy.

But man do I feel so much better right now! I wasn't that far into school and hadn't taken any loans so money won't be a big issue. I feel a little bad for quitting so early but now I feel alive again!

I was even able to make a Christmas list and actually feel excited about Christmas!

It sounds like it was the right decision for you. Being depressed and those stressors can put the brakes on creativity. (From experience, I did not come up with my original ideas until I started treating my own depression.) You take the time you need to self-care as much as you can.

I'm rewatching my favorite episodes of Doctor Who and it just occurred to me that all my favorite companions only lasted one season. Now I'm wondering if they're my favorites because they didn't wear out their welcome.

Twitter shitting itself over Evangelion's 'problematic themes' in the year 2020 is testament that I am officially too old for the site. For fuck's sake, it's Evangelion. Hello. It's been cool from day one specifically BECAUSE it's problematic, not despite.

I finally ran into it guys. Twice in one day, actually. Fic writers who link their ko-fi accounts. And granted, the stories and smut are A1. And they're not out here holding things hostages. HOWEVER..."like it? Support me by donating to my ko-fi" ...I don't know how I feel about this. I felt slightly slapped lol.

On the one hand, if I commissioned a piece of work, (say fan art) if I'm getting a physical object, I would pay for the (labour?) and materials. And with a fic...I don't know. If they're writing it to my specs, I guess part of me does expect some kind of trade. But...cash? Mmmm. Part of what makes fandom (at least the making of fanworks) fun for me is that it's always been free fun. Making things out of the joy of whatever it is (and granted, everyone has different reasons) but...I don't know. Maybe I sound like a fandom old (barely, I'm an early/pre 2010 aughts fandomer) but...at least in my neck of the woods, people did things for free (as far as I'm aware?). Even the archive sites -- I think there might have been maybe a yearly "hey, want to keep the site alive? Please donate to help me pay for the website" and frankly, I don't even recall that. This person just ran this site until they didn't lol.


Anyway. I'm on the fence. What is your opinion? Have you paid for commissioned work (specifically fic) or been paid for a commissioned fic? WAS THIS recent? How did it work in the days of yore? Do you ever donate to your fave authors? Why or why not?

Also, I'm not side-eying anyone, I'm just kind of shocked.

I'm actually okay with a Ko-Fi link at the end of a fic.

I'd side-eye a Patreon link because even though I think you can do one-time donations there, too, it carries the connotation of being a significant part of an author's income? It really gives the impression of turning fandom into a business.

But Ko-Fi has the connotation of a tip jar, and that I'm perfectly fine with. I'm not going to put money into it but it's fair to put it out.

Sure, health insurance is nice but every job should really give employees free coffee and tea, and like, at least 20 different flavors and varieties to choose from. Minimum. All work buildings need to be equipped with blend racks - they should be as ubiquitous as bathrooms.

Most cops aren't bastards. They're either openly disapproving of police violence but get ignored because they don't fit either side's narrative, or they're silently disapproving because they need to keep their job, and we don't have a world where crime would disappear if every decent person simply quit being a cop. You can't dismiss a group that's still a necessity in today's world as only made up of bad people. That's just a convenient way to ensure you have someone you're allowed to hate.
