I dunno, nakama is technically translatable, but to me its always had a deeper meaning that just "friend". Like in Arlong Park, the line "Nami, you are my friend" doesn't have the same impact as "Nami, you are my nakama" imo.

That's why I believe it has a lot of different meanings. It doesn't just have to be friend. That line could be translated as "Nami, you're one of us!" which I get a whole lot more emotional over than "Nami, you're my nakama" and "Nami, you're my friend". Which I'm kind of hoping FUNi uses or I will be sad.

I don't know. It just jars me that I see different characters use it when I know that some (Arlong, Aokiji) don't mean it in the same way Luffy does. But I realize that it's now kind of a tradition in OP translation (and fansubs in general) so I kind of accept it. Though, I do a little happy dance when it DOES get translated.

"Nami, you're one of us!" is a really great translation. It works well.

Yeah, I've gotten used to the nakama tradition, because there is so many levels and meanings to the word. Yet translators seems to just stick "friend" or "comrade" as the soul translation, and that kind of waters down down the original intent of the lines.

I should probably also have put in 'inb4 "deeper meaning."' English has plenty of nuances of language -- no language is special in that respect. A good editor should have enough knowledge of the language it's going into to be able to use its nuances.

Any translation notes should go from the translator to the editor, not from the editor to the viewer, so that the editor can do their thing and make it accessible and meaningful. It is possible.

Yes, English have many nuances, it doesn't necessarily mean that it can translates well into different languages all the time. Remember languages are tempered from the tongue's culture as well. Not every language is completely translatable.

Honestly, the whole "nakama" thing could be translated into "comrade" which is pretty much what it is in the context of OP-verse.

And I disagree with that think translators is only to the translator to the editor. Sometimes it's better to leave it untranslated or explain things. It's not like manga is original for this kind of thing. Many publishers leave Shakespeare in Old English, which is pretty damn different than Modern English in the context of words are used. Not to mention, some editions of Classical Literature and the Bible does it too.

Gratuitous nitpick: Shakespeare is in Modern English; it just happens to be Early Modern English as opposed to Contemporary Modern English. Chaucer wrote in Middle English. If you want Old English, you're looking at Beowulf and some more obscure works. "Wherefore art thou Romeo" isn't that hard to figure out; "Hwaet! we Gar-Dena in gear-dagum" kind of is.

Well, that line is understandable, but a measurable amount of Shakespeare uses words and metaphors not in the same way like we use them today, to the point that a good amount of Shakespeare books have translation notes or "translated" to Contemporary Modern English.

And thanks for correcting me what kind of English it is, though.

Anyone who has been reading English their whole life should be able to understand Shakespeare without referring to the footnotes. Yes, there are subtleties you will be missing, but it does not need to be "translated". A good 75% of Shakespeare's genius was in the way he said things rather than what he was saying; absorbing meaning from context is the best way to learn new words.

Maybe it's just me, but I find footnotes distracting and harmful on the first read-through of a text. Most of the time, I already understood what was being said even if I didn't know the term. A note takes you out of the story and emphasizes its fictionality.

Just in case you're not, it's derived from the Latin camera, "room", and originally meant "fellow-soldier sharing the same barracks." The political meaning comes to us by way of 19th-century French socialists using the equivalent word (is it camarade in French? I forget) as a substitute for all the forms of address that imply a power imbalance between the two speakers.

The Russian word "tovarishch" means roughly the same thing, and is translated into English as "comrade," but the word "comrade" itself has a long and storied history in English and has nothing to do with Russian whatsoever. It came from Rome - almost the opposite direction, geographically speaking.

Er. Linguistics wank ahoy! But really, nothing about that word is Russian except its use in too many Cold-War-era spy movies.

Thing is though, comrade has been used in too many Cold War era spy films, and a translator who knows her audience will bear that in mind - regardless of the true origin/meaning of the word, the point is how the reader will perceive it.

Well, it doesn't have any meaning to a reader with no Japanese who's never encountered it before.

On the one hand, I agree (no one in Yuugiou fandom translates "aibou"), but I also believe that a "true" translation would be able to convey the same feeling as the original without resorting to notes. English has twice as many words as most languages and a rainbow of selection for every sentiment; there's really no reason the text shouldn't speak for itself.

Better friend than no meaning at all, which would have been to me.
