And her song sucked as well.

I love the music of this movie, but the actual story is a complete trainwreck.

Barnum was an actual monster, why should any other character based on an historical figure be safe from historical revision?

I really feel sorry for the actress as well because this and The White Queen are the only two things I really remember seeing her in, and The White Queen was a thankless "man, this woman is really annoying" kind of thing as well. Plus I hate the fact that series makes out like the women (including her character: Elizabeth Woodville) were the massive evil schemers like it wasn't medieval England and most of the bullshit should actually be blamed on the MALE monarchs actually in charge of things.

You might like her playing a real villain in Doctor Sleep.

I actually haven't watched that yet but would like to - so I'll keep it in mind!

to be fair, you really can't expect more from a phillipa gregory adaptation.

Haha, you're right and should say it! I've tried reading her books. I couldn't get beyond the first few pages of The White Princess because I wanted to vom.

Oh do tell, I study early modern Britain and I love hating on Phillipa "I never met a historical fact I wasn't allergic to" Gregory

Basically, from what I remember of those very few pages before I threw my mum's book across the room, it's just an endless internal monologue about how she had the hots for her uncle and is sad he's dead. So yeah, Gregory is running with one theory (Richard may have wanted to marry his niece, though a lot of historians dispute that being A Thing*) and making it super gross.

*(He possibly explored the idea but there is evidence of him looking at other non-related women iirc, so it's not like it had to be his niece or nothing. His main issue was his wife and legitimate heir were both dead. Any fertile woman would do at that point!)

I know what you mean. The Wars of the Roses is one of my areas of interest so I'm a sucker for reading ANY of it but her books are too much. And the adaption of The White Queen was just baaaaad. For example, the Battle of Bosworth FIELD fought in August being in a FOREST with SNOW/RAIN. And for some reason Margaret Beaufort showed up *during a battle* to slobber all over her son about his epic victory after the killing blow because fuck accuracy.

Haha, I should've scrolled down because I came here to blame Gregory, too.

Phillipa Gregory novel: this one woman is amazing and smart and the best and everyone who doesn't bow down is evil! Also, all the other women are jealous! (add historical background, rinse and repeat.)

Very true. She picks a favorite woman or two and then villainizes all other women. I hate her stuff so much.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I blame Philippa Gregory (the author of the books that series was based on), she's got some huge hang-ups about evil scheming women and likes interpreting many female historical figures that way. Anne Boleyn is the most obvious one. Gregory thinks she's a historian or something, and doesn't seem to understand she's writing War of the Roses/Tudor fanfiction.

Historical fiction is fine but the belief that you're telling some unspoken truth while writing it is just URGH. Also her idea that strong female = scheming (and that's their defining characteristic) just really doesn't speak to me. At all. It's just...that's not really an improvement on female characters or historical women in general being an ornament?

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
On the plus side... I (and likely a lot of other people) never would have known this woman existed if not for this movie.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-06 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I've been told she's well-known enough in her native country of Sweden, and you know what, I don't want Hollywood anywhere near my country's historical figures if this is the treatment they're going to get.

I absolutely agree.

Also I straight-up hated the music in this, which is the one thing most people will defend. I got out of the theatre, took two steps, turned and looked at my parents and said "I can't remember any of the songs from that", that's how blandly forgettable I found them.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-06 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
They were written to be catchy, instead of being part of the actual story, and that ensured they were absolutely forgettable because nothing made them stand out from every other song they sound exactly like.

This secret radiates Jenny Nicholson energy. Her greatest showman video touched on this and it was my first foray into the real PT Barnum.
