That one time everybody was guilt-tripping Penny into thinking she was a horrible person for not wanting to have Leonard’s kids. The worst was Bernadette, who was super anti-kids and seemed to resent her own children, but still hopped onto the “you’re not a real woman without children” train. And then Penny got pregnant on accident a few episodes later. It was just a really gross and unnecessary storyline.

Ugh, yes. That was horrible, and honestly, I just hated Bernadette in general, she was an awful character.

I liked Bernadette in the beginning, but she just got meaner and meaner and I ended up hating her character.

As a woman in a marriage where we don't want kids, I bailed around Bernadette's change of heart because I just knew how it was going after that. I'm glad I didn't waste my time anymore when I read comments like this. If they show had continued, wouldn't be surprised if Amy and Sheldon ended up having kids too *rollseyes*

I read that it was mentioned on Young Sheldon recently that Sheldon and Amy did have at least one kid, a son named after Leonard. As someone who also doesn't want kids, it's annoying that apparently all characters on everything ever have to have kids (even ones that started out not wanting them), but honestly, society is so obsessed with people having kids that although I wish it was different, I don't expect anything else.

I expected it too anon but it's just so...disheartening? You can be involved in raising the next generation, trying to teach them right etc without being the one who created and/or birthed them. I wish this would be acknowledged more because then maybe it would stop being seen as such a fringe issue.

ayrt

Oh, it's definitely disheartening. Every time I turn on the news, there's someone flipping out about schools being closed and BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN???!!! hand wringing, and honestly, I'm just tired of hearing people talk about kids in general, but I can't imagine it'll ever change, because there's always going to be the whole "the children are our future!" mindset. What you said is probably more realistic than for society to suddenly stop revolving around kids, but I'm so tired of it.

At least with Sheldon and Amy, there was one previous episode where Sheldon had mentioned wanting a kid with her, I guess? (Though he had some weird ideas about how they would go about raising it.) It's been eons since I watched the show though so I don't remember much about it.

In the later seasons, Amy wanted to have Sheldon's children and Sheldon was at least open to the idea, so I thought it was really stupid for Penny to be the one who ended up being pregnant. It probably doesn't have any deep meaning, but it bothers me that the two women who didn't want children ended up pregnant and the one who wanted children didn't have any (though according to the above anon, it happens anyway later on).

You're right that it probably doesn't have any deeper meaning (other than writers being unimaginative) but it kinda hit something in me where I felt bothered by it? Almost like the show went out of its way to make the stereotypically hot women mothers but Amy (the drab, nerdy girl who actually wanted it) doesn't get the conventional and lazy happily ever after in the main original show? Idk. As I said, I know I'm reading too far into it but it doesn't sit right with me for some reason.

And honestly despite all his faults I would probably take Sheldon as a father over Leonard. At least Sheldon (while I was still watching the show anyway) tries to approach things in a way that makes sense to him while also trying to adapt to what Amy needs, whereas Leonard is just entitled.

ugh this. there is nothing wrong with not wanting kids, why do so many TV and movie writers want to push kids on everybody?

It was gross and sexist and reductive, but BBT has always been gross and sexist and reductive, so... I just sigh and go back to fanfic.

I don't even watch BBT and that would piss me off.
