I was hoping that someone who watched the show would join in on this and respond. I only watched the first episode of this show, and was hoping for the same sort of interactions you were though, OP.

To be fair, the show ended a good while ago, and I think most fans moved on to 3 Bellow or Mages. (+ the community here seems to lose traction at the end of the year.) At least the secret is posted!

I actually agree that focusing solely on Jim's mom as their connection cheapens some of the great interactions they had at the beginning of the series and it was a bit of a weird pivot for the show.
I also think there's enough subtext in there that Jim can't accept Strickler caring about him because, well, been there, done that but, he could agree about his mom.

True, the subtext from Jim is there, and I guess I appreciate it for Jim to not just start caring for Strickler!
Still think we could get more from Strickler's side, maybe more reasons for the Arc. For me, the focus only being on Jim's mom takes a lot from his character.
