I actually agree that focusing solely on Jim's mom as their connection cheapens some of the great interactions they had at the beginning of the series and it was a bit of a weird pivot for the show.
I also think there's enough subtext in there that Jim can't accept Strickler caring about him because, well, been there, done that but, he could agree about his mom.

True, the subtext from Jim is there, and I guess I appreciate it for Jim to not just start caring for Strickler!
Still think we could get more from Strickler's side, maybe more reasons for the Arc. For me, the focus only being on Jim's mom takes a lot from his character.
