I always wonder this. Mindlessly following orders like lemmings isn't quite my idea of dominance there...

I'd just like to step in and stress that people's issue with the Avatar movie casting is ENTIRELY the fact that white actors have been chosen to play explicitly Asian and Inuit characters. If there had been a culture in the Avatar world that mapped onto Vikings or Romans or whatever that would be different. Of course "diversity" doesn't mean "no whites allowed," but the Avatar casting outrage is less about diversity for its own sake and more about the deliberate whitewashing of characters' ethnicities.

Ah! Well, apologies for bothering you!

Most of the wank over the DBZ movie is how much fail is in it without the need to bitch about race (not to mention an entirely too light Piccolo who's a light yellow green rather than a dark green similar to the Wicked Witch of the West like he should be). Really, I am afraid for the movie because the shit's going to hit the fan for any surviving DBZ fans. We're mocked enough and the movie is not going to help matters.

Especially with whoever that guy in the picture is, he's hot.

[identity profile] blitzbebe.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT explains why I love my own character (he's an ex-Nazi who's lost all onfidence and just needs a hug and DAMMIT YOUNGER!HIM WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO LOOK UP CAUSE MY MIND MADE HIM HOT. DX Never write war stories when you are in love with a man in uniform. XD)

Submissive Nazi would be my boyfriend. For eternity.

Well, strictly speaking, only some writers even distinguish between the "feminine" blonde/brunette and "masculine" blond/brunet anymore. It used to have a clear difference, but most writers nowadays, including published ones, pick one spelling that they prefer and use it for both male and female characters. I've only really seen it as "blonde" and "brunette," very rarely seeing blond and brunet, so those two spellings look odd to me. I can understand why people would only use one or the other, especially when it's become way more common not to differentiate.

I don't quite get why using "the blonde" or "the brunette" is bad anyway, though. I mean, strictly speaking, once you know someone's name you never really think of them as anything but that or "he" or "she," and one of the major rules of writing is, after all, "Don't be repetative. Except with said. Use said. All the time. B|"

Paraphrased, of course. XD

I used to a lot, but I kind of. Fell out of thinking "blonde = girl; blond = boy" when I stopped seeing blond pretty much... anywhere. XD I'm so used to it now that it looks really odd not seeing the "e" tacked on the end.

I can get that! It's kind of like the debate on using adjectives. Unless it's really laughable, I actually don't mind/like seeing things like "he said tightly," or "she said quietly," but so many of the books on writing I've read have acted like it's the most horrible thing an author can do. 8| Personally, I prefer "the blonde" to, like, "the scientist" or something, because at least if you're looking at someone you're noticing their physical traits. Probably not as likely to be randomly thinking about their profession. XD

Re: 110

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Because euphemisms like that tell, not show, and they're repetitive. That's why they're 'bad'.

Re: 110

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I can definitely see that, and see not liking it. Once you've shown that a character has a certain hair color, you don't really need to keep saying "the blonde." It's unnecessary at that point, but it also get really repetative to be like "She looked over at him. She said this to him. She laughed at [name]. She tilted her head slightly at [name]'s words" and so on -- and there are times when just saying "he" or "she" can make things way more confusing, when there's more than one person of that same gender in the interaction. As long as it's not overdone, I personally don't think it's all that weird to run across.

Re: 110

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you have a good point. It seems that there's really no clear way to avoid being repetitive, so it's more preference than anything that dictates what the reader finds a better fit.

I just dislike euphemisms because I find their use to be heavy-handed and overdone when used. You don't just see fiction with one or two "the blonde"s inserted when necessary; it's always a constant usage, as if the writer can't come up with any other type of description.

Re: 110

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oogh, yeah. That I hate. And I actually find it weird when something less physical is used to describe -- like, I can get "he placed his hand on the shorter girl's head" even if we already know the girl's name, but it really feels out of nowhere to me if it's like "she smiled at the artist" or something and there's no reason there for them to be randomly thinking about the person's profession or hobby. If you're walkin' down the street and talking to your friend you might be at least subconsciously noticing that they're shorter or they have blonde hair, but it's less likely you're thinking "this is my friend so and so and they are a writer! 8|b"

But it's mostly preference when it comes down to it. I go "eeeegh" when something gets repeated way too much too, and yeah, I've seen that a lot. Any sort of constant usage besides names, pronouns, and "said" gets really, really weird looking.

But then, it could be far worse. They could be making up words like calling the boy in my icon a "silveret." Yes I am totally serious ;;

Re: 110

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I can agree with you there.

And I'm sort of amused by silveret, but that's because I live with an ESL speaker and I'm used to random made up words. I spent three years of my childhood wondering what the hell a doohickerythinger was and why it was shaped like a doorknob.

Re: 110

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Silveret sounds like a bird to me. 8| So I can't take it seriously when someone's calling the local dickjerk that. XD At least it's not the DNAngel fandom, where apparently they had people calling one of the characters a "bluette"... which I may be mistaken but I think is an actual bird (just spelled wrong), which amuses the crap outta me. XD

... Doohickerythinger is so cute. But then those kind of made up words, I love. Doodad is an awesome word too. :>

Re: 110

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
And it just hit me that I meant to use the word epithet, not euphemism. FTFF, self.
