105, 110

105. I could go into the reasons why Aang is not a Gary Stu but that would take too much time, and I don't feel like it.

110. First off) how they look doesn't really matter next to the part where their culture is primarily Asian (mostly Chinese and Japanese), so really odds are they are not white. Also Asians do have a variety of skin tones not all of them have pure white skin. (Also how in the hell do Zuko, Mai, Iroh, Ozai, or Azula look white to anybody?)

Secondly, why do we need white people? There are plenty of films with just white people, it isn't like if one film out of how many doesn't have white people will mean that poor white people will be put out to the pasture, I think we are doing damn fine in representation, lets have a mainstreamed movie with something else for a change.

Besides a white person in a bunch of Asian garbs and culture is just going to plain look odd.

I mean I am white and I wouldn't cry if I found out that an Avatar movie didn't have a white person in it. Really, if I wanted representation that bad, I would go to probably the other 9 movies out at the time

Yeah, but in cases when it's obvious the writers are trying to send a "YAY, DIVERSITY!!!" message, it comes off kind of cheesy, like a Captain Planet type scenario. (Or Puzzle Place, if anyone remembers that...) If you can make a good film with a completely or mostly non-white cast, and have it feel organic and natural that those people came together like that, then more power to you. Avatar seems to be like that.

But I've also seen people written as racial stereotypes whose personalities and interests ALL derive from their ethnic background, and I get the picture of a writer who really means well and wants you to care about diversity, but can't picture the characters as three-dimensional human beings. It's kind of like with female characters. If someone can only write women as the strong, flawless type that is A Representative Of Their Gender, then I'd rather just read/watch about their men.

I think my point was more that I don't see why some people are like there has to be white people in it, as if that is some requirement. In Avatar, it makes sense that the characters are not white given their surrounding culture. I see it more as "UNITY AND PEACE YAY!" not so much "YAY DIVERSITY".

I just don't get why there is an absolute need for there to be white people in the film.

It's just nice to see someone who gets it. It's not that I hate white people or don't want them in my pop culture at all (some of my best friends are white! ;), it's that I really would like to see people of all ethnicities (and genders and ages and sexualities and body types, etc) represented. Honestly, one movie with few or no white people is not going to hurt anyone.

It made me smile that you understood, so thanks!

"Secondly, why do we need white people?"

Uh...racist much? Like, did it ever cross your mind that the Hollywood-types are thinking, "Seriously, why do we need Asian people?"

Re: 105, 110

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
First off, this is just concerning this one film and others similar to. It doesn't mean that I don't want white people out of all the movies period, I just don't see why having white people in this film is such a big deal. For just this particular movie, I don't see a problem with it not having any white people. There are plenty of films, and will continue to be plenty films that only have white people.

Actually yes, because I don't think they think that primarily non-white casts are profitable, and I think they are dead wrong.

Re: 105, 110

(Anonymous) 2009-01-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
If you're saying the exact same things they're saying, but substituting another race and a different excuse, it doesn't make your statement any less racist than theirs is.

Clearly, to do the story justice, the Avatar movie needs to have a diverse cast. But, as the secret says, 'diverse' does NOT mean 'nobody is white.' Actually, it would make a certain amount *more* sense to have a white Fire Nation, an Asian Earth Kingdom (and Aang) and an Innuit/pale black Water Tribe; rather than insisting that "Everybody HAS to be Asian NO EXCEPTIONS!!1one!"

Re: 105, 110

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Look if you are making a film based in England in 1800s focused on the upperclass, then you are probably only going to cast white people for those roles, why couldn't that work the other way around?

Look I am not saying that white people can't take part, but they probably shouldn't be the main roles, because the culture is not that of people who are racially white. I am sorry. Why is it so important that white people have major parts in this film?

Why in a world that is Asian based would it might be considered the most and all if possible adhere to cultural norms.

Honestly I am not asking for a diverse cast, I am asking for an ACCURATE cast, which was never going to happen but I had hoped it would have been better. I just don't know why people are so "THERE HAS TO BE WHITE PEOPLE" in it when honestly that ethnicity should be the exception as opposed to the rule in the Avatar world.

Nobody's saying white people have to be in the main roles, they're saying that they should be the Fire Nation. That would be a diverse AND an accurate cast, since it's relatively clear that the interpretation of the Fire Nation could go either way. You get a pridominantly Asian main cast with geniune diversity in the minor roles, the story would be richer for it and everybody wins!

"The exception and not the rule" makes perfect sense - so why can't the Fire Nation be that exception? Especially with the Water Tribe in there as an exception in the other direction (going for a non-Asian minority, I mean.)

Insisiting on an entirely Asian cast in a show where not at least two of the main characters AREN'T ASIAN but Inuit is just as bad as inisisting on an entirely white cast.

Re: 105, 110

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the majority of the Fire Nation doesn't look white to me, the only character of name that does is Ty Lee and that is only because of her eyes which were done for stylistic effect. ANd out of the four nations, the Fire Nation is the one most consistently steeped in Chinese culture. I don't know, but I can't buy Fire Nation, I could maybe buy a certain part of the Earth Kingdom just because it is bigger and covers more land and maybe the Air Nomads though that is suspect too. But yeah, Zuko, Mai, Azula, Ozai, Iroh, Piandao, Jeong Jeong all are Fire Nation and all do not look at all like they are white, which is why I can't buy the FN as white either.

I actually wanted Inuit or at the very least Native actors for Sokka and Katara, because well I would have liked accurate casting that took the culture of the characters into account.

My thing is that I think the majority and most likely the whole world is not white.

Sorry, you can't be racist against a majority. The word you are looking for is prejudiced.

Re: 105, 110

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, not racist at all. The opposite, actually. The point is, why would you have to go into every movie thinking there has to be white people when you don't have to ask that question about any other group? The reason people have to make an effort to demand more characters of color is that the playing field isn't level.

But speaking of the Avatar movie there actually doesn't *need* to be any white people that I can see, given who the characters are (including the Fire Nation, which is obviously Asian-influenced). There *can* be white people in it, but the world in the story doesn't include anything European-based.

In a perfect world without racism there could still be movies with all-white casts, all-black casts, all-Asian casts--whatever combination anybody wanted. Right now there's a big imbalance, which is what makes it racism.
