I can honestly say that I have never run across anyone using typo as a verb before this instance in my entire life. Apparently people are using it as a verb everywhere and I live in a cave or something.

Whether or not a dictionary is the be all end all, I'm going with what I've always been told is the way the word is supposed to be used, and according to every written source I've seen, typo is a noun.

I've never seen it used as a verb before that secret either. We must be in the same cave.

THANK YOU. I have a feeling it's a very crowded cave.

At least this cave has got cable!

This anon didn't even notice the secret maker used typo as a verb. That's likely due to the fact that I have the habit of reading words out of order and quickly reassembling them in such a way that makes sense... so perhaps I have seen it used as a verb and just did not know it.

lol, dyslexia.
Spellchecking two sentence secrets: it may be harder than you think!

*roasts marshmallows with you in the cave* Hey, anyone wanna s'more?

That's funny because I've been using it as a verb for several years now, and I'm not the OP. We must be running in different circles, but it's still a valid use of the word.

Re: #157

[identity profile] delicatelight.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
You say valid, I say grammatically incorrect. And I have written documentation to back me up on that.

Do you believe ain't is also grammatically incorrect? Many people thought so, but it has since been added to the dictionary, and even then, when it was added to the Webster's 3rd Unabridged, it caused an uproar among grammarians. It's still not something that you would use in academic writing, but it is valid and correct. Grammatically incorrect is completely subjective and arbitrary.

Okay, we're obviously not going to agree on this.

If you're in a professional setting, you'd want to use all your words correctly. Whether or not a word is commonly used incorrectly or not, if you were composing a letter, or speaking to a supervisor, you'd want to use your words correctly. Fair or not, people are judged by the way they speak and write.

The accepted norm of the word typo is as a noun. Grammar is actually not subjective, that's why the rules of grammar are referred to as just that: rules. There are right ways and there are wrong, and I'm probably rigid about this, but to me, grammar is important, and I'm not going to attempt to bend it to my will.

Re: #157

I'd want to use my words in a matter that I would be understood and that my intentions would be clear. That is all. Whether they are grammatically correct or not is beside the point. If people judge me by that, fine. If they judge me by it to my face or where I can hear/see, they get their prescriptivist ass called on it.

I would like to point you to comma rules if you don't think that rules of grammar are at least sometimes subjective. They fluctuate so highly that I stopped paying attention to most grammar books when it came to them.

But as you said, I'm not sure that we will agree on this.
