the criticism on disney princess movies is about how narrative influences society on a wide basis not the belief that every little girl is brainwashed. society does that, movies are just an aspect of the whole.

for the record, do you believe that there is such a thing as propaganda? if so, why don't you explain how the mechanism for propaganda movies differs from how regular movies influence attitudes. and if you can't, like maybe think about why you're taking this personally?

IA and to add - not just propaganda, but advertising in general. PR and advertising are hundred billion dollar industries and it's not because they don't work.

Seriously. I couldn't believe the comments on this secret. Like really, FS, we're going with, "Cultural criticism isn't necessary because I grew up just fine"?

And even taken on an individual level, how do we really know exactly what we have internalized from our childhood media without deeper examination anyway? Here OP is pretty damn certain that the intended takeaway is about finding a man, but what about all the implicit messaging about the importance of physical appearance? Yes, that's something that society as whole endorses, but Disney movies are pretty influential tools in helping to disseminate these views.

+1000

the irony of that secret calling others self-congratulatory...

I'm honestly so tired of so many people on Fandomsecret's rabid belief that media does not have an impact on culture. I know people are freaked out the fandom purity police that wants to ban everything. But telling everyone, "It's fiction. It doesn't have any real impact on people" is equally harmful too. Enjoy your fiction, problematic and all, just consume it critically. When it comes to Disney, it's good to remember that Disney Princess line was a billion dollar industry in the early 2010s (It probably still is now, I just can't find the data on it).

Yup, you've hit the nail on the head and it's sad that so many people on this site miss it. Media and culture are two parts of a whole, they both affect one another and media often showcases internal, or external, biases that exist within a given culture.
