Oooh yeah, that's a great feeling. Always nice to hear someone else say out loud what you've been biting your tongue about.

I get it, OP. The first thing I do after deciding a fic isn't worth reading anymore isn't to hit the back button - it's to check the reviews to see if anyone expressed the disappointment / irritation / disgust. Mostly, I just see vapid positive reviewer/author exchanges (OMG, so goood, write mor plz!/ ** blushes ***) and that does make me feel justified in bailing the fic, but...
... once in a while, someone has bothered to write something biting and accurate about the fic's flaws - nothing personal, outright cruel, or truly excoriating - but just the right level of sarcastic - and I will admit I get a kick out of that. It's a great combination of vindication and entertainment. [And yes, part of the joy is a have-my-cake-and-eat-it-too glee that such things were said but that I didn't say them].

I used to find a lot of joy in these kinds of things, but now I can't find myself to be that petty. If a fic isn't working for me as a reader, I just stop reading and know to stay away.

As a writer, I know negative comments are bound to happen so I try not to invest too much emotion into it, and take the criticism. I do give it a fair chance and reevaluate my fics or writing techniques, but IMHO I would prefer if people don't leave negative comments. My fanfic writing is for me to have fun writing.

I should also add, I'm not an active fandom participant. I tend to like to be as anon as possible. I dip into fandoms from time to time, but my active participation in some old fandoms in my teens and 20s messed with my mental health a lot turned me off to being super active. I prefer to just have fun with fandom and if I don't like something I turn away from it. I think I want to clarify this because I do understand when someone floods a certain area with things you don't like and it's hard to not have it shoved in your face in your fandom.

Yup. As a writer, I know what getting negative comments feels like. So even if a story someone wrote is really bad, I don't want them to get really nasty comments. If they actually ask for critiques, then sure, make helpful comments on how to improve the fic. Otherwise, either say something nice in a review or if you don't like just walk away.

Used to be that asshole myself, 20 years back. Seeing fandom turn increasingly toxic over the years, I just can't do that anymore. It's small-minded and cruel, and no one deserves to be shat on for a harmless hobby.

Let people enjoy the thing and scroll past.

I'm still insecure enough to find joy in such things... fic schadenfreude, really... but generally I try to avoid fandom, including comments, as much as possible, for various reasons. Most of the time I only feel worse if I do read comments looking for vindication -- because instead I'll find things like "THIS IS MY FAVORITE FIC EVAR" etc. (and then wonder why those people aren't reading my stuff). Knowing that there are TONS of valid reasons for a reader to choose one fic over another that has nothing to do with the quality of someone's writing is no comfort, either, for some reason.

I too would prefer to receive no negative comments at all, even concrit ones that aren't nasty. This is my hobby and escape, and I'm here to have FUN, not to become a real writer.

Honestly would feel the same. It actually reminds me of the one time some random disgruntled anon kept complaining about a certain fic (which wasn't bad or really that OOC, but not the best either) with random snippy comments. I felt really bad cause they commented on literally every chapter with ten words like 'uhh, I don't really like this, I kinda wish you wrote it differently' every time... After like the fifth chapter or something the author (who actual was kind enough to reply to every comment and even tried asking why the grump felt that way) just thanked them for sticking out for so long since it was obvious they didn't like it but kept coming back to read it anyways.

On the one hand, I get it. It's really catharitic to get someone to say it like it is and leave a negative comment. I used to feel this way in the past. On the other hand and I'm gonna semi quote my favorite fic author, everyone has their own interpretation of the characters and they are all valid because in the end it's just fanfic. That made me rethink a lot about fanfic and get the stick out of my ass because at the end of the day it's a way for people to have fun.

I myself am doing an exchange with a friend over tiny pairing and honestly, I'd rather have constructive criticism and people telling me where I can improve rather than having someone flame my fic because they don't like it. Also you're not only flaming their fic for a tiny pair but also scaring off other potential writers.

So tl;dr it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt and then no one wants to play with you.

Those are my two cents.
