103. *juuuuuust gonna pass this one by, good luck there with your sweeping unfounded judgements*

109. ... "isn't any point to it"? I don't get it. Does a hairstyle have to have a point? O_o Maybe the character just... likes that hairstyle (obviously, or they wouldn't have it). That's like saying there's no point to having bangs that cover your forehead unless you have a forehead scar, or long hair unless you're hiding something that's on your back.

110. Lmao god I would love to see it but I can't see it happening because no one could or would force him and he would rage if someone kicked dirt on his pride by even thinking of suggesting it. XD

114. Are you an idiot? Just because you hate anything that isn't shallow doesn't mean that some of us don't love huge long epic plotty fanfictions. Get back under your rock and keep having fun feeling better than people, bb.

121. Aha, awww. Silly anon is silly. Haven't you heard of topping from the bottom?

123. Yes. ): ♥

126. I can see this. I find enemysex hotter when it's two girls, if not more viable. Bestfriendshipping is a lot of fun and a few of my OTPs have come from it, for both sexes, but I tend to gravitate toward the weirder stuff anyway (even if it is BFFshipping). ;)

127. THIS NEVER NEEDS TO BE A SECRET, ANON ♥♥♥♥

128. Manga fans in bookstores confuse me, too, OP. ): Maybe it was because of where it was stacked? IDK how your bookstore works, though. My local store disgusts me because it includes pretty much anything with even the vaguest of BL in the area with the hardcore porn and violent-bloody comics. >/ So it's kind of like... lol TABOO to be caught in that area, especially in a mostly-Christian community. Though, the level of confusion makes me feel like your bookstore isn't set up that way...

131. And yet, presumably, you liked the original. This has logic.

132. I've been thinking about this a long time, and have come to a conclusion, and at this point I don't care about the porn anymore, either. Even the rape porn. Every fandom has rape porn -- and yeah, this is RAPE PORN OF COUNTRIES REPRESENTING HORRIBLE EVENTS, which I can see the argument as being insensitive, and totally wouldn't blame anyone for being upset, squicked, irritated, etc, and deciding they don't like that part of the fandom (though lol at the ones assuming that part of the fandom = the whole goddamn fandom).

But seriously: think of it this way, and I can't get too bothered myself anymore. The characters are both being betrayed as the countries, going through historical events -- but also as people. The mangaka actually goes to a lot of effort to craft most, if not all, of those countries into believable characters, even using the cliches. They have specific likes, dislikes, speech patterns, personalities, and ways that they react and interact with each other. They're countries, but they're also human characters. It's not hard to make the next logical leap and conclude that the people porning the countries aren't doing so because "omg it's England, that continent makes me so hawt!" but because they like the human character of Arthur Kirkland.

Sure, people do think of the history. It's cool to think of historical occurances being paralleled to human interactions between two or more people instead of whole countries. But I seriously don't think, even if there's historical precidence to hint at (or proclaim canon) the pairings for Germany/Italy or Austria/Hungary, the fans would be near as numerous, prolific, or excited/happy about their pairings if they didn't have the chemestry as humanized characters to back it up.

Just a thought, and not going to say it means you have to say, "oh, that's okay, it doesn't bother me now!" But hopefully it's a little easier to see how people can pair and even porn countries from this series now, since most people don't see them as just countries. I know I can't get into a series at all unless I fall in love with the characters, no matter how good a plot is (and a bad plot or no plot at all can be totally forgiven 8|b), so. This isn't really a direct response to the secret at all, just... something I've been thinking about for a long while.

Re: 132

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Hahaha, I'm basically going by, I heard of this series and thought "lmao wow porn of this would be weird," and then got more into the characters and. I ship some stuff. And I use their country names and am aware of the history and relationships between countries and stuff, but I also just... love the characters as not-huge-landmasses-populated-by-tons-of-people, so that put a lot of it into perspective. XD

Re: 132

[identity profile] spurnedambition.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. Seriously, if I ever had to defend why I like Hetalia, I'm going to somewhat be paraphasing your argument. Not trying to suck up, it's just that I was thinking something along those lines but could never really elaborate on it, and you explained it eloquently than I could. :) When I first heard of it, I knew it was potentially offensive and was skeptical about it. Then I just gave in and read it-and I ended up loving it. And just like you said, it was because even though they were technically countries, the characters were so loveable. And yeah, I ship stuff, but I don't read that much pairing fanfic, let alone porn.

I've heard of people who hated history in school, yet have become geniunely interested in it because of like you said, the characters. Most history classes only emphasize dates and what happened on those dates. "In *insert year here*, such-and-such happened." Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's necessary for educating history, but you lose your audience. But Hetalia grabs that audience because it puts a face on those events with characters that people could relate to themselves and to other people in their lives; like historical fiction in books, movies, etc. but in a different way by making its character personified nations. Part of it is that Hetalia develops little interesting tidbits into it strips-such as some WWII Russian troopers who jumped out of a plane without a parachute because they thought the snow would be soft enough to save them, or America trying to develop a gun that would make combatants on the battlefield fall in love with each other (srsly that's true (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bomb) wtf). Another part is...well, compare the two: "The Pact of Steel was signed on May 22, 1939 by Germany and Italy" to two men, one a no-nonsense kind of guy and one who's kind of a ditz, making a pinky swear to help each other out if any one of them is in trouble. Go to a fan post, change the countries' names to those like "Naruto," "Ichigo," "Ed," or whathaveyou and it just seems like a regular fandom. Take away the fact that the main trio are the Axis Powers, and it's a comedic duo of a rules stickler, the stoic, and the airhead; and take away the fact that the other five main characters are the Allies and you have the Five Man Band (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveManBand). Sure, it's the fact that it uses countries that's the problem for some people, but it seems to me like they are characters first, just interacting in the way and making similar choices as their national namesake. And I'm sure that fans are not stupid enough to believe that all German, Japanese, and Italian people are "rules sticklers, stoics, and airheads", nor are they stupid enough to believe that the nation as a whole and in general is like that.

*comedic trio
orz

Looks like I went a bit tl;dr there. o.o

Re: 132

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, no worries, I tl;dr all the time.

And I'm just glad my explanation worked! I'm often afraid I make no sense when I blather, so it's good to hear. And I can hear you on the shipping -- I vaguely ship a few things, and totally ship Austria/Hungary because orz best married couple ever, but I've barely even touched fic in the fandom besides one or two genfics that were history-based 'cos they got linked here (including the kink-meme response with no romance that had Canada ranting at America about his people's behavior being why the country can't have nice things XD). And if I'm not looking at fanfiction or porn in one of my fandoms, SOMETHING IS ODD. I'm not even opposed to the porn, though I'd probably avoid the rape because the little voice in the back of my head going "... real history D:" would squick me too much, I just... haven't touched it for some odd reason.

AND YES, WORD, THIS IS ME. I couldn't get interested in history at all in school, because it was all... rote memorization and stale facts and rarely had any sort of human face put to it, and I have realized that I actually have very little interest in any classwork that I can't associate with personalities (just names doesn't work) or music. The Revolutionary War? Should be much more interesting than the way it's taught in schools. I always thought it was sort of a neat subject, but nothing ever stuck. One of the first Hetalia comics I read was America cleaning out his attic and remembering England, including during the Revolutionary War, and suddenly I'm really interested again -- I'm a sap but that whole scene made me tear up. And you're right, putting a mental image like that to the fact and date just helps it stick for me.

I personally can't bring myself to have any problem with the stereotypes of the characters, if only because they're based on the nation itself throughout history rather than the people of that nation. Saying that America has a history of being brash and loud and jumping into wars isn't the same thing as saying all Americans are brash, loud warmongers, so I can't be insulted by that. I can certainly see why people could be offended, and easily so -- how it would be hard for some people to seperate the characters-as-countries from the characters-as-people, and how that fact could make it impossible for them to enjoy the comic. That's fine, and I'm sorry that they don't like it and were upset over it, and hope they have fun with what they love, just like we do. It's just ridiculous to paint all fans as horrible people because we like a controversial series, and I'm pretty darn sure that's all most of us have a problem with here, though many are dealing with it badly and... should stop that. >_>

... Also, oh my. America's aphrodesiac bomb. I. I haven't gotten to that one yet. T_T

THIS: Although I have to say, I'm probably the only person I know who was disappointed that my friends weren't talking about actual anthropomorphic porn when they they said they shipped certain countries. I had in my mind the actual map countries going at it in a very Rule 34/extended metaphor way and I thought that was pretty interesting. Then they showed me the typical chibi-esque characters and I totally lost all interest whatsoever. But then I'm weird.

Re: 132

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA. That's kind of awesome. Hetalia would be a lot more funny if it was just the outlines of countries with "8D" faces drawn on them or something, I gotta say. And I'm okay with the drawing style, tbh, but I really don't love it and think it's messy and repetative with some of the characters. I have a hard time telling US and UK apart, and Russia and Prussia. :| Plus, I have barely even touched fic for this fandom and no porn as of yet, which is weird as hell for me, so I totally feel left out when people do the whole "PEOPLE ONLY LIKE HETALIA FOR THE PRETTY BOYS AND PORN" thing. XD I FEEL SO ALONE.

Re: 132

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried really briefly to read the LJ based translations, but I just got confused. I'd only be able to stomach gen for the fandom because of the character design anyway. I simply can't see chibi characters as anything other than 5 year olds, and 5 year old romances are good for an "aw how cute" and a snore, or else creep me out. I really don't understand how anyone can see them as sexy.

Re: 132

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Y-yeah actually I'm having the same problem. I don't know why, because I don't have any trouble reading Azumanga Daioh or anything, but maybe it's just because it's all in a straight line down the page. But the format of comic strips going straight down the page in an LJ post makes it really, really hard for me to focus on. Anything. XD;

The regular Hetalia comics, though I'm not all that fond of the art style, I find it cute! They're not so much chibi in those as drawn really cutely, but for some reason I can't really see porn either, or be like "UNF HOT" between two characters. I ship a few, but mostly in a kind of. "They'd snark and/or be sweet and possibly cuddle" way, or the kind where they're sort of domestic in that really excellent way where they're pretty much married but. Not. Except in the case of Austria and Hungary. But the Chibitalia characters... y-yeah. I cannot at all see porn between the Holy Roman Empire and Italy, kaythanks, though I do ship them in a "childhood sweethearts and then they lost each other baw" sort of way. XD

... but then I ship people with alien frogs. Sooooo. I'm a special headcase.

Re: 132

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
People with alien frogs sounds hot to me! I've been reading my way through Olivia Butler and her alien-on-human fetish, frogs don't seem strange after you've had tentacle aliens.

Re: 132

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
... I feel not alone. :D I need to read some Olivia Butler, actually! I've been hearing her name around a lot. Any you'd particularly recommend~?

Re: 132

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Lilith's Brood (http://velvet-mace.livejournal.com/278916.html) is my favorite so far. And it has the tentacle aliens in it. I hear Bloodchild is good, but I haven't found a copy to read yet.

OP: 109

(Anonymous) 2009-01-09 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, I really should have phrased that better. What I should have said was that it's not very practical. Or... is that the right word for it? I just don't know why someone with two functioning eyes would want to only have the full use of one of them just to look ~supar cool~.

Um, does that make more sense?

Re: OP: 109

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yeah, that does. XD Thanks for the better explanation there, I know it's hard to get things down to a, for want of a better word, "soundbite" for a secret! And yeah, it totally looks not-practical. I know it varies from person to person, because I have a few friends whose hair is constantly in their face/eyes and they don't seem to have a problem with it, but I can't stand it even slightly.

... it could be worse, you could be totally loving on a character with this guy's (http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/clubs/4/38714m.jpg) hairstyle. Sob. XD
