You live in the wealthiest country in the world, with a completely unequaled miliary force. America is the world's number one consumer, and when America's economy fails, everyone's economy fails. Americans don't care about the world because in their position, they don't have to. That's privilege.

Do you know why you could have a growing movement towards idiocy in the past few years? Because your country has the luxury of being able to choose to be idiots and still have a higher quality of life than most African nations, and even most first/second-world nations. You elect an idiot president, fight a war no one supports, break laws that other nations have to obey, and the rest of the world can't do shit to you. Because you're goddamn America, fuck yeah, here to save the motherfucking world yeah. And if other countries don't like it? Tough titties for them.

That is fucking privilege, but also beside the point. The point is that Americans don't seem to get upset about a series/fandom that has deeply troubling racial/historical issues until it personally makes them feel bad, because apparently it's not offensive until it offends them. That's bullshit.

Diff non-American anon

Funny you should say that, as it's actually part of his characterization in Hetalia.

And Team America: World Police, so there's that too.

You live in the wealthiest country in the world, with a completely unequaled miliary force.

Wealthy in total dollars, but not per capita. Plus 70% of our money belongs to 1% of the population.

We only have an unequaled force because of technology although the defense spending (that's pretty out of control as well). Plus, this 'policing of the world' is exhausting our troops numbers.

It's less of choosing than don't have much of a choice for most people. Guess what, in America, if you live in a bad neighborhood with a shitty school, you're pretty much stuck there unless you a) lie about where you live (which is illegal now but people still risk it), and b) have money. People cope with it by not saying a solid education isn't all that important and people who do have the money or managed to scrape enough to pursue are elitist. A sickening thing? Yes, but I personally have seen it happened to people who are close to me. The only reason it is not a really serious problem now because the generation isn't old enough to do real damage yet. And the reason I chose not to use African countries because they don't even have a stable economy in most areas. But are you really going to say we have the best education system in world? Colleges maybe, but even the American population in them is predicted to shrink little by little because there is a growing population of Americans that simply aren't qualified for college.

I didn't get the President I wanted (the shitty part of a democratic republic that 51% of the people is enough for your vote to not count), I never wanted the war and I wanted the UN to stop acting like a bunch of pussies and charge Bush and his administration for his war crimes, but they won't. Who is really running this country, any country really, is who has the money, if you have it, it doesn't matter what Joe Shmoe says if he doesn't have the cash to back it up.

Honestly, most fans do get that Hetalia can be offensive to some people, but the other side has to know not all people feel that way. This is an issue that not everyone will agree with. And I'm very sure that some people who hated Hetalia didn't really care until their country was in it too (and yes, I have seen past posts when this happened).

And who asked you to police the world? What makes you think you have the right to police the world? OH WAIT.

Guess what, in America, if you live in a bad neighborhood with a shitty school, you're pretty much stuck there unless you a) lie about where you live (which is illegal now but people still risk it), and b) have money.

Guess what, this is the same situation in every other country. Except some countries are all "bad neighborhoods". Sometimes the options are a) until you're raped and murdered or b) have your money stolen by a local drug lord though. Drug lords that exploit their native people to provide drugs to other countries, including America, by the way.

I wanted the UN to stop acting like a bunch of pussies and charge Bush and his administration for his war crimes

Are you totally naive? What do you think would happen? That Americans would LET them take Bush and put him on trial? That Bush would let HIMSELF be taken out? That Americans would ever put up with the UN (which the majority of Americans hate and despise, ironically, for trying to be "world police", except by world they really mean America police, and no one polices america) exerting any kind of authority over them?
Why do you think the UN acts like a bunch of pussies? BECAUSE AMERICA IS HUGE, HAS ALL THE WEAPONS, AND REFUSES TO LISTEN, AND THEY ARE SCARED OF YOU. What an advantageous position to be in!

I do understand that not all Hetaliafans feel that way, but it seems the majority of them here at f!s do.
And yeah, other countries have done the same thing, and I call bullshit on them as well.

And who asked you to police the world? What makes you think you have the right to police the world? OH WAIT.

Most Americans ask the very same thing to our goverment, y'know. Except for neo-cons and their supporters, no American wants their country to be a world police.

The Drug Wars exploit all sides. Most people agree that just legalizing would give a huge blow to the cartels. But what does this have to do with quality education not being a right in America?

Fuck, at this rate, we'll give you them with a red ribbon around his head. Have you see his approval rating? We're pissed as all hell he did all of this fuckups, which is why we responded the only way we can by letting the Democrats take over. Hell, some Americans even had made petitions and investigations in this administration. Americans don't hate the UN for being "World Police!", we hate them for being utterly fucking useless when the time comes for them to act.

The only "weapon" that ultimately matters is nuclear bombs and last I checked we aren't the only country with nuclear weaponry. Of course, in the end, money talks. I don't doubt, if say, the European Union or China wanted to destroy the US, they could, but they invested a lot of money in this country so it would be stupid. Same for America to attack them or China.

No, they did at first, but that wasn't enough. By the fourth posts with the same secrets, it was obvious to most that detractors wasn't even interested in listening so some fans started to ignore them and some resorted to blowing them off. Although, most is an exaggeration since it seems people are counting the non-fans like 132 as well for some odd reason.

Also, there is no such thing as second world countries anymore since that term was used for Communist regimes during the Cold War.

how the table turns

(Anonymous) 2009-01-09 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Just like to point out one thing. Remember a couple of days ago when the big argument for hating Hetalia was that it leads people to overgeneralize countries as whole solid entities rather than the individuals living in them? You know, that national stereotypes fail to represent the actual people and that countries shouldn't be judged based on their representative governments?

Your entire rant is apparently about how the whole entire United States is a corrupt hive mind that moves and breathes in unison and is out to police the free world. While their foreign policies in recent years may make this assumption somewhat tempting, America is still not its government. Seriously, even speaking as a non-American, it's kind of amazing to see this level of hate being trotted out and thrown in the face of someone simply trying to argue that the average American isn't automatically more privileged in every single other person in the world. This doesn't help international cooperation anymore than the idiocy of the Bush administration has. You buy into the stereotype even more than the Hetalia fantwits.

Also, that last point is ridiculous. There's no evidence that the person posted the secret is even vaguely upset about the series. They're just worried about some standard seme/uke bullshit, now with added lulzy nationalism.

Re: how the table turns

(Anonymous) 2009-01-09 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Fun fact: The rest of the world doesn't interact with individual Americans. We interact with the government YOU ELECTED to represent YOUR INTERESTS.

Also I don't recall an argument about not judging a country based on its government, just on not judging a country on racial stereotypes. I'm not sitting here calling Americans big dumb white fatties after all. I'm saying that you've generally fucked over the entire world in the name of your own self-interest. So Joe Shmoe didn't want to invade Iraq, boo hoo, it still happened because your government made it happen so take some responsibility.

And yeah, the average American IS more privileged than the majority of the world. Accept it.

The fun part is that everything about Hetalia is colored as nationalistic, simply due to the nature of the series itself.

The fact that people are puzzled that this leads to conflict is anyone's guess.

"My country's not a pussy!"
"What, are you saying mine is?! It isn't!"

Fun fact: The rest of the world doesn't interact with individual Americans. We interact with the government YOU ELECTED to represent YOUR INTERESTS.

You know that elections works in a certain way right? Last time I remember that I wasn't eligible to vote the first time around nor I voted for Bush the second time around.

Then why keep blaming every American for it? Nearly half didn't want Bush a second time, and didn't want to start a war. But key word: nearly half doesn't cut it here. Do you have a right to be pissed at Bush? Yes. Do you have a right to blame our fucked-up government? Yes. You even have a right to blame the people who voted for Bush the second time around. But to blame every American for this shit is unreal. To say every American is more privileged than everyone in the world is equally wrong.

All the responsibility I could claim is to acknowledge that the war, like all of them, is stupid, educate anyone who thought it was a good idea in a first place and protest against it (which sadly enough, the bureaucrats are making it hard for everyone across the board).

Re: how the table turns

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
On average, Americans are more privileged than people in other countries. The other person is trying to argue that, on a case by case basis, an American might not receive so much more privilege, especially in comparison to citizens of other developed countries, that it would distort their way of thinking and blind them to the problems of the world.

I think it is precisely your refusal to see the United States as more than what their government displays to the rest of the world that makes it so easy to perpetuate this animosity, which, I'll be frank, is less than useless. Instead of appealing to those Americans who are willing and able to support international cooperation for conflict resolution, you are content to sit and berate the entire country, which isn't going to do much in terms of getting the US government to amend their foreign policies, as can be seen from their track record in a number of previous incidents, in every single one of which the US underwent heavy criticism and pressure from every corner of the world. In fact, if you have been following the current Middle Eastern conflict, you will see that shaming the US into action is exactly what the UN has been trying to do, and it isn't going terribly well.

Finally, what Hetalia is and isn't has been up for debate for going on several weeks now, but if one thing is clear, it's that nature of the series means that anyone taking offense for the depiction of any one country is missing the point.
