Re: This is a confession (non-fandom)

This.

My mother works a public service job and had to go to her office at city hall for the first time in months today. While she was there, a group of anti-mask protestors surrounded the building with the goal of performing a citizen's arrest on the mayor. It was one of the stupidest things I'd ever heard but it also potentially endangered my mother, who couldn't leave her workplace safely. Don't be angry at the countries who behaved responsibly during this crisis; be angry at the ignorant people making it harder, and the policymakers that cater to them.

Holy crap.

This is the year I finally had to admit I don’t understand America. I just don’t. I grew up there, was educated there, I considered myself culturally American for years. And I’ve read tons of literature on class divides, racial tension, what have you. I have a degree in Economics ffs. But I just can’t rationalize any of this shit.

Yeah, that's the thing! I didn't want to directly say this in my comment, because I didn't want to bring anti-American sentiment into it, but I do not live in the USA and neither does my mother.

All the best to your family. I wish I could say I don’t know why my mind immediately went there, but honestly, we know why.

My younger sister lives in the States and got laid off this fall. And due to aforementioned strict policies of my own country, my parents can’t even get her on a flight home. So yeah, even in the “safe” countries, we too are pinning all our hopes on the vaccines. Until the world is safe, nowhere is safe.
