I feel you, OP. My dad's a pastor for a reformed church and I have this thing for catholic seminarists and young priests...

(Anonymous) 2020-12-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I increasingly get the priest thing.

OP - Oh mood. I didn't even realize this was a thing for me until this year. 2020 bringing out ALL the weirdness. 😅

Thank you for making my comment into a secret, Secret Maker! I love the pictures you chose! (I also remembered a couple days after I commented that I was having a moment with Castiel from Supernatural last month. Oy.)

I have a thing for characters who are angels or priests. Sometimes I feel a little weird about it.

Are things rough at your church because of the pandemic? I know at mine, they're having a hard time getting adequate donations for everybody because they're getting almost triple the amount of people coming in for food donations.

OP - Oh yeah, our finance people have been wringing their hands since March, but we're hanging in there. I've been doing a lot more emotional labor, though, helping people find food and rent resources and talking to members who've lost people to Covid. It just sucks to see how much everyone is hurting this year.

Oh man, bless you for what you do. Being there for people emotionally is such hard work. Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself, OP.

That's so interesting that you work at a church. Your secret is cute tho

Apologies if this sounds exoticizing, but I find this absolutely fascinating.

I'm an atheist, raised in a non-religious culturally-Jewish household (with a mother who is borderline anti-religion given her experience with Orthodox Judaism). So I just come at this from a very different experience and I sometimes have a hard time understanding a Christian religious perspective, although I think it's important to try.

Some questions...
Do you think you particularly like the characters because they're religious/devout? Is it a secret because it feels wrong to be lusting after them, or is there something else I'm missing?

OP - No worries! I’m low-key fascinated by people who weren’t raised religious.

I know my stuff with Aziraphale is more sympathizing with his situation than wanting to bone down. I was born and raised religious, and like I said, I work there now, and I’m… starting to think this isn’t how I want to keep living my life. There’s pressure from my family & co-workers to be more devout, but I’m feeling like I want to break away. Nicky’s part of that as well — at some point in the past he realized the religious dogma he was part of was wrong, that “the love of my life was part of the people I was taught to hate,” and now he's moved on. So on those two (and Castiel, who I forgot to mention but is also in the mix), it’s, like, the catharsis of moving away from religion but not being vilified for it like I fear I would be IRL.

The Priest is… yeah, I think maybe I just want to fuck Andrew Scott on that one. Or maybe I like how secure he is in his faith? Or I like the conflict of his faith being tested? I’ll have to think on that one.

AYRT - Thank you for such a thoughtful response! That all makes perfect sense to me. And I hope you find a path that makes you comfortable and satisfied.

DA - if you haven't already seen it, might I suggest Keeping the Faith with Edward Norton. I think it is relevant to your interests.
(I am with you on the Nicky (andJoe) love!)

OP - Oh yeah, that looks right up my alley. Thanks for the rec! (And Joe/Nicky are the best! I've been beset by a bunch of Old Guard plot bunnies lately.)

DA

I don't know if you've ever seen the show "Evil", but one of the main characters on there is a priest in training, and he deals with some of the same struggles with faith that you speak of. So if you're interested, I'd recommend that show as well :).

OP - Oh shit! I actually really like Katja Herbers, and I had no idea she had a new show. Thanks for the rec!

AYRT

You're welcome :)! She's great in it-I love her character. I hope you like it!
