I don't get panic buying, at least not for non-perishables. It's not like people didn't have an inkling that Christmas might mean another lockdown. You should've stocked up weeks/months ago AND finished holiday shopping, ffs.

Usually I agree, but with Brexit just the other side of Christmas I kinda get it this year.

... was Brexit a surprise?

No. But there were halfwits who thought our glorious leaders would somehow make it all happen smoothly and with no pain. Those fucking idiots have had a nasty shock at the news stories talking about food price hikes and shortages following Brexit - a situation the rest of us have known was coming since the godforsaken referendum.

I'm in the U.S., but boy, can I relate to the sentiment in your second sentence there, in regards to watching people getting so upset about things that others tried to warn them about ahead of time. Amazing, isn't it, how the last few years have been full of examples of one side acting shocked shocked that things have gone to total shit, while we on the other side are sitting here going, "WE FUCKING TOLD YOU SO!".

I've been following the Brexit stuff via news and John Oliver's show and whatnot and to say it's a total mess would be one hell of an understatement. I'm sorry you guys are going through all of this-I don't know if there is any positive way this can be resolved, but I send sympathetic thoughts to all of you having to deal with this.

NAYRT In general, no. The specifics are still a mystery and it's happening in two weeks time. And we've been put back into lockdown at very short notice, so more than a little uncertainty going on here. People act irrationally at times like these.

It's not a surprise but it's more than nobody has 100% known what to prepare for (from civilians to hauliers) because NOBODY has told us wtf it's meant to look like. The issue is that you've got the ERG headbangers who wouldn't be happy with anything less than surrounding the UK with an 1000ft electric fence with gun turrets that automatically shoot anyone who dares to come near the coast and Boris Johnson is so obsessed with holding onto power that he's scared of just telling those absolute fuckwits to fuck off. Meanwhile, the rest of us suffer.

My husband and I have been grabbing extra tinned veg here and there since November but we're definitely pissed off that we're having to even consider this.

Not always panic-buying, a lot people can't afford to buy a months worth of food/supplies ahead of time...

I don't spend a whole lot at once, I just buy a couple extras each time I go to the store and maintain a certain amount of [canned goods] in my pantry, just in case.

... I thought everyone did this? Maybe it's just because I come from an area that is prone to regular natural disasters, but I've had it drilled into my head from a very young age that you should always keep a supply of non-perishable food on hand in case of emergencies. It's just what you do where I live.

Re: How we doing today?

nayrt but I do this, too. I cook nearly all our meals, so I have a bunch of non-perishable ingredients that I try to keep on hand at all times - stuff like rice, beans, canned tomatoes, etc. so that in a pinch, I can combine it with whatever meat/veg is on sale that week and make a meal.

But a lot of people who don't cook regularly or don't organize in advance only purchase ingredients by the recipe. I did that too when I first started, but honestly... that takes too long and it's just not convenient.

I have a week or two of stuff on hand

but if you told me I might need to go a month without going to the store, I would need to go on an emergency shopping run

Isn't panic-buying one of those things, kind of like a bank run, where like. Even if there isn't actually a supply problem, once people start panic-buying it can create a supply problem that wouldn't otherwise have existed, so it's hard to respond calmly.

And moreover... if your expectation is that everyone should have been stocking up enough food to last for months, that's just unrealistic.
