Well, of course they'll try to take out any hint of homoeroticism. But they probably thought they'd done that in the first movie and they super didn't. And I doubt it will stop the fandom for a moment.

I just assume everything is low gear keyed towards attracting a slash fangirl audience these days. We're bankable money in terms of merch and all they have to do is put in a couple of moments then no homo the fuck out of the rest of the series/movie.

NAYRT

You would think they would but I'm pretty sure they mostly don't

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I'm not sure that the people in charge of these things are that aware of slash fangirls, never mind interested in catering to them even on a low key level. They want the broadest appeal, not niche appeal.

Probably true to most things, but I remember that when Venom came out the "girls are in Venom" "people ship venom/ed!" made news at the time.

I'm not trying to be snide here, but... so what? The fact that it "made the news" suggests that people thought it unusual. That doesn't mean the creators were aware of it during production, or that they made the film with the goal of appealing to slash fangirls. Fandom looks big, when you're in fandom. But they're a minority compared to the general viewership of any given movie.

I'm genuinely puzzled as to how you could possibly think this was true. Look at the majority of mainstream media in the U.S. Does that really look like it's geared towards slash fangirls to you? Mind you, I'm not saying they'd turn down a following if it was there, but I don't think that's a significant consideration and I'm also not seeing how "bankable" the merch consumerism is for slash fans specifically.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
People really conflate 'I ship something in this' with 'the creators specifically targeted my interests' when it comes to media content and it's weird as shit.

9/10 slash fans enjoying something is an accidental bonus, not a deliberate choice.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Right? There's a huge difference between "I saw a dynamic between two male characters in a show that I ship like burning" and "the creators 100% did it on purpose for people who enjoy m/m pairings". I think that's just weird wishful thinking. The "because we buy so much merch" is even weirder and more out of touch with reality. But I notice that when people are deep in fandom, they tend to lose perspective on how niche fandom often is, still. Just because it's a huge part of your world doesn't mean everyone who watches that show/movie is in fandom.

Given that fandom doesn't even make up 5% of the overall audience of something I seriously doubt media creators consider slash fans at all, so I'm boggled at this statement.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I figure someone's got their slash goggles on so tight they think that's how the rest of the world sees it, too.
