Volunteer as a beta?

(Anonymous) 2020-12-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that would make too much sense.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
rofl

(Anonymous) 2020-12-30 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
How could they feel so judgmental and superior if they actually volunteered to beta rather than make "unfinished" fic "better" for their private amusement??

I guess those who can, do; those who can't, "edit"...

You and the nonny above must have some piss in your cheerios this morning...

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I had a bagel and it was super tasty, thanks.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not the same. I'm not OP, but clearly the enjoyment is in taking something you love and making it better. Beta reading is fun sometimes, but I often get things to edit that aren't what I'd choose to read.

Also, what up with the bitchiness? It's not like OP is shoving her edits in the author's faces.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
reading "bitchiness" into the above comment says a lot about you lmao

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I actually meant the comment right above me, but the top comment is kind of shitty too, so it all works out.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
DA - I would presume they mean the other comments in this thread and just lack attention to detail - something you definitely would want in a self-proclaimed editor.

+1. Find some people who really want to improve their writing and offer your services.

There's two sides to being a beta.

The right beta will help someone become a better writer, for sure. No matter how good a writer already is, a good beta will help.

The wrong beta will make writers want to quite writing.

OP of the secret might be a good editor, but they may lack the graciousness it takes to work with another person to help them be better/edit their work.

(A thought, I don't know for sure, of course)

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Also, part of being a good beta reader is respecting what the writer wants from their writing. Often, what the writer wants may not be what's best for the writing. What the writer wants may be melodramatic, or OOC, or unrealistic, or repetitious, or whatever. But it's what they want. And while a good beta can maybe help make what the author wants into the best version of itself, it's not the beta's place to make the fic "better" by making it less like the author wants it to be.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
DA - indeed. And the OP would clearly make an awful beta for this reason (and many others).

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a good beta reader also requires being able to tell the difference between changes that would be best for the story, and changes that would bring it more in line with what you personally prefer. The overall tone of the secret doesn't give me any confidence that OP has that sort of self-awareness.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Which also means that the OP is not a good editor, either, because that *also* takes that kind of graciousness.

I would recommend that the OP keep doing what they're doing, including not telling people they're doing that. They should not, in any way, try to interact with people, at least not on the subject of writing.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They'd actually have to respect what the original author was trying to do with the fic, and it's clear that they do not.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see your confusion. You think that typos and awkward phrasing are all part of the author’s vision. For most authors, it’s just that writing is hard.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-31 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - I see YOUR confusion. You think people are only talking about typos and awkward phrasing and not, as another person here put it: "Rewrite the endings, replace the characters that I hate with ones that I like, change dialogues..."
