Nah, I emphatically reject the argument that fic writers should just be putting in the hours for their own fun and not hope for even just a little bit of gratitude or acknowledgment in return for providing people with things they enjoy (whether that's actually reading it as intended, or in the OP's case, judging it and having the chance to indulge in their hobby of making other people's work "better"). Fandom would be a pretty boring place if writers just kept their hard work on their own computers to enjoy just by themselves, and people like the OP wouldn't have anything to feel superior about.

But I guess that's just one difference between those who actually create something new for a fandom community of people with shared interests, and those who just take and consume, only focused on their own enjoyment.

Fandom would also be a pretty boring place if no one wrote mainly for their own fun, because if you just want recognition, why would you write anything but fluffy coffee shop AUs of whatever is the most popular thing at the moment?

Contrary to your assumptions, I do create new things for fandom community, though I guess you could say I'm only focused on my own enjoyment, because I only create things I would like. I write fic and create art of my own favorite characters and pairings, which are usually moderately popular at best, and I post what I create online because I think there's bound to be someone besides me who would be glad to have more content. I have my writing betaed and self-edit to the best of my ability, because a part of the fun for me is to produce as polished a product as I'm able. And I'm not going to lie, being told my story is amazing or even that I'm someone's favorite author feels incredibly good, but no one is obligated to say that - especially if they don't mean it. And if someone else posts a new fic for one of my pairings and I think it's mediocre or bad, I am not obligated to be grateful for it just because it's new content.

But I guess that's the difference between those who actually try to create quality content and those who think creating something new automatically makes them better than the plebs consuming it.

There are plenty of ways to meaningfully contribute and participate in fandom besides just creating something. Judging by the OP's tone and attitude, I'm guessing they do not, and I have no respect for people who think they have a right to judge amateur creators for something they won't even risk doing themselves.
