One should also note that, in just about every other way, NewWho is very tolerant.

Textually, anyway. Reader-response criticism can turn up some pretty ugly skeletons.

As far as I'm concerned, if it wasn't deliberate, then you're reading too much into it. : ) Cause you're reading more into it than was intended.

The thing about skeevy subtext is that it's there regardless of authorial intent. And the thing about authorial intent is that it's incredibly difficult to prove or disprove. Hence the first word in the phrase 'reader-response criticism'.

I still think that tis reading too much into it. Not necessarily a bad thing, but... if you see something NEGATIVE that the author totally didn't intend, then one should really just ignore it.

So, uh, if someone picks out some detail that the author didn't mean anything by and hadn't even noticed yet, and sues it to prove something bad about the author, that's okay with you?

If there's a legitimate reason to complain, yes. If it's an extremely minor detail, certainly not; if it's a pattern that multiple people have noticed and called the authors on without any acknowledgement, certainly so.

Well, if it's a pattern, or a major detail, then there might be something in it, but sometimes people do pick up on the tiniest things.
