No, the problem seems to be that its on the internet at all. If they don't want people taking their stuff, the only way to make sure of that is to never upload it in the first place. For every courteous person on the internet, there are a hundred jerks who don't give a shit; if they want to use the art/fic/whatever, they will. They may credit, they may not. Doesn't seem to matter either way though, since the authors/artists get butthurt about it and overreact anyway.

I'm just telling it as it is, and piracy is a reality, there isn't really a whole lot you can do to stop it. Once one place or person is shut down or run off, another will take their place.

I realize it's a reality. What I'm saying is, though, that fans have no right to the sense of entitlement they have. That they seem to think the internet gives them. Piracy is gonna happen, but what I find really annoying is the people that seem to think they have some sort of self-righteous right to whatever they want. Maybe it's useless, but I'm not just going to sit around and pretend like I approve of such immature, stupid behavior.

If I'm quite honest, most Japanese fan artists or fanfic writers do not expect their sites to be accessed by people who can't speak/read/write Japanese. Most sites have passwords or a similar process to accessing the site, alongside conditions regarding the images/text on their site.

Japanese fans do respect this. The attitude regarding fanart and fanfic is entirely different.

I understand your point of view, but the original artist or author does have a right to feel irritated.

This. SO MUCH.

Also, it is exactly the attitude of "It's going to happen anyway so why bother to stop it? The author will get butthurt when someone else does it anyway!" is what causes the problem of art theft to be so widespread and even considered justifiably legal here on livejournal. Piracy is a sketchy area at best, but within fandom everyone is technically breaking the law, so respecting your fellow lawbreakers feels like a sort of etiquette within the underworld. Even among criminals, there's always a limit.

Either way, people complain that sitting by and doing nothing about a problem is the same as supporting it. By that same argument, why should we sit by and let it happen if we don't approve of art theft of this sort?
