Not gonna lie, I judged Tite Kubo (Bleach author) way more harshly once I learned Mayuri was one of his favorites.

Like, I can understand evil people being fun to write or draw, but absolutely no justice was brought against that guy.

This was me when Kishimoto of Naruto said that his favorite female character was Tenten - like? She has to be the most under-developed character out of everyone in the main cast, what the hell is there to like?

wAIT, his favorite is the girl in the main group that gets the LEAST screentime?!

(Anonymous) 2021-01-05 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of male authors think "favorite girl" means "girl you'd want to date/marry," which sure is reductive and says a lot about what they think of girls/women, but anyway. Considering how the developed characters in Naruto are all full of issues, someone plain like Tenten would probably be high on the list of characters from that series who I'd actually date.

Eww, Mayuri was his favorite? Why? No wonder that go never got any sort of comeuppance.

Like to draw, or just in general? Because dang, Mayuri was like a war criminal.

Looking back at the interview, it's to draw, but he also cosplays as Mayuri

(Anonymous) 2021-01-05 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
It could be that Mayuri was the most fun to draw

The characters are all his creations so evil or good, they're probably all the same to him. Kubo seems the type to favor an interesting design over personality, too. And anyway, I don't get this, who cares if he likes his evil character? Fiction, remember?

See I'm the opposite with fanfic, anyway. I don't want to know which characters a fanfic author hates because then I wonder if anything that happens to them or any negative portrayal is bashing.

I do think that how much an author dislikes a character affects way more the character than when an author likes them.

This is interesting to me. As someone who's been writing fanfic since before I knew it was a thing (since before I was even on the internet), I have found myself in the unique situation that whenever I start to write about a character I hate from canon, I slowly grow to love them.

My most popular story ever (which I kind of hate now, lol, it had sooo much angst), was this love triangle between the two male leads of a show I liked, with the villain of the triangle being a female love interest of male character #1 (she was a love interest of that character for a couple seasons on the show too). I haaaated her from the show, but as soon as I started writing her, it was like I started to understand her and her motivation. I slowly grew to love her so much. I even ended up writing a short spin-off just about her and her life and why she was how she was, and why she loved this man, and my readers fricking hated it. They were all like: how dare you write a story only about her, yuck. (She's pretty well loathed in the fandom, by all the normie fans too).

TL;DR, I don't even know how ff authors can even hate characters they write. When I start writing a character, I fall in love with them. Even my villains I love to pieces (even when I hate their actions)!

Yeah, but if that's the case it's usually obvious already.

hmm I don't think having a favorite character automatically implies that they want the best for them or want them to be sympathetic to the audience, but i do wonder about plot armor. i do question when they talk about certain characters in a certain way in interviews tho, and I tent to think the audience surrogate is every author's favorite, lol.

I was gonna refute that it's not always like that but then I remembered a case where the author wanks a certain character so much, he uses the other characters to praise their strenght and beauty and it has soured me on the character.

So yeah.... I can see where you're coming from.
