All writing can be improved by a competent editor. But those are thinner on the ground in fandom than a lot of people seem to want to believe.

The only time I ever tried having a beta, their grammar was worse than mine (I admit mine isn't perfect), they tried to convince me to use regionalisms/slang that didn't make sense for the character (think 1960s California surfer talk for a 1930s Chicago private eye), tried to force me to take the story in a direction I didn't like or want, and then threw a strop that I wouldn't credit them as a co-author. I ended up blocking them -- what a massive waste of time! I'd rather have slightly flawed work and enjoy making it than open myself up to dealing with an idiot like that again.

Stories like this are why I’ll probably never have a beta again after falling out of touch with the fandom friend who used to give my stories a once-over. Outside of working with someone I knew I could trust with it, I’ve had bad beta experiences on both sides of the exchange, and even if I could figure out where to start looking, I’d be afraid to try.

Also, threw a fit because you wouldn’t credit them as a co-author? What the Jesus Christ. On the one hand, I’m not surprised something like this happened, but on the other hand, OMG what the hell.

Well, they'd given me so much valuable input! Why wouldn't I credit them for their hard work? :eyeroll:

Me too. I've joined fic events where betas were required and had the honor of being ghosted three times over. Two of them midway way through. Sent off a chapter for review and never heard from them again. At least the last one had the courtesy to never even start. So I am personally done with them. My work may be flawed, but hey it's done and the edit chapter button exists for a reason.
