Is that not a normal amount of milk? It seems normal to me, but maybe there's cultural differences about dinner drinks.

DA - To me that is a lot of milk (or any calorie-having beverage) to consume with dinner. I might drink that much water with dinner, but if I were going to have milk it'd be about half that much.

Kids need milk, and my daughter, for instance will drink two or three glasses a day (she's not a kid, but still).

The amount of milk children, on average, ideally require in order to grow and maintain healthy bones and teeth was seriously overstated in the past. And there can be negative health impacts to drinking too much milk.

If they like it, aren't lactose intolerant, and aren't struggling with childhood obesity, then cool. It may do them good and it probably won't hurt them. But the assumption that a big glass of milk with dinner equals health is outdated.

I'm 51 and I still drink about that much milk at least a few times a week, because I'm not lactose intolerant, I like the taste of it a LOT, and I need all the calcium I can get as I get older.

If you have a family history of osteoporosis in older women in the family, as I do, and you aren't lactose intolerant, you SHOULD drink it. It's a very good cheap and readily available source of calcium, and that will help your bones and teeth in later life.

Kids need calories though? They're growing and developing and all that takes energy. Plus, there doesn't seem to be a big source of fat or protein in the rest of their dinner (noodles/broccoli) so it seems like that's how they're getting those nutrients.
