okay but if you think betas help you with SPAG, which you say right in your secret, then....that is a "use" or "help" they provide so why are you being a ass about it? the requirements are for a beta not an editor. get a beta that does SPAG and nothing else. how did they catch you if you weren't having obvious problems a beta could solve?

I thought this too, but an anon upthread is saying they wouldn't want to be credited as a beta reader if the author was unwilling to take their advice (beyond just SPaG).

I think it kind of depends on how much the fic event in question micro-manages things. If they're fine with their writers requesting only a basic beta for surface-level errors, then I totally agree that OP has nothing to lose (and probably something to gain) from accepting a surface beta. But if a deeper and more involved beta process is mandated, then I get why OP is like, nah, I'm good thanks.

No, I'm that anon and I meant just SPaG.

If someone has a weird headcanon or whatever, that's not my problem as a beta for a fest. I just make things readable and suggest fixes for anything that's baffling in the text.

I agree if it's a required that the beta do depth work but I've never met a community or challenge that could do the moderation work monitoring a beta/author interaction would require on top of all the other exhausting moderation work. like maybe it exists, but OP finding a bunch of communities and challenges like that? what fandom is this, you know?

It's entirely possible they were stupid enough to credit a sock that's been linked to their main account as their beta. People who lie to weasel around rules they don't like instead of just sticking to communities that don't have those rules are frequently not terribly competent.
