I thought this too, but an anon upthread is saying they wouldn't want to be credited as a beta reader if the author was unwilling to take their advice (beyond just SPaG).

I think it kind of depends on how much the fic event in question micro-manages things. If they're fine with their writers requesting only a basic beta for surface-level errors, then I totally agree that OP has nothing to lose (and probably something to gain) from accepting a surface beta. But if a deeper and more involved beta process is mandated, then I get why OP is like, nah, I'm good thanks.

No, I'm that anon and I meant just SPaG.

If someone has a weird headcanon or whatever, that's not my problem as a beta for a fest. I just make things readable and suggest fixes for anything that's baffling in the text.

I agree if it's a required that the beta do depth work but I've never met a community or challenge that could do the moderation work monitoring a beta/author interaction would require on top of all the other exhausting moderation work. like maybe it exists, but OP finding a bunch of communities and challenges like that? what fandom is this, you know?
