As someone who's been writing fic for several decades in fandom I have noticed for a long time how ridiculously thin-skinned most fic-writers are. Yes it's a hobby so English-paper dissertation length comments pointing out the flaws aren't the done thing and I'd never suggest they should be, but pointing out a spelling mistake or two are not personal attacks.

And yet a startling amount of fic-writers seems to consider that so.

Same. I've given what I consider to be really mild constructive criticism* sandwiched between sincere praise and still had an author blow up like I'd personally attacked her. Many writers have no idea just how hair trigger sensitive they are about concrit, even when they've asked for it.

* For example, since so many anons are eager to believe in awful beta readers without iron clad proof - "I love how you included [detail] and used [more detail] to tie together the plot! There's a minor issue in paragraph 4 where you mentioned that [Character A] is present, but in the previous paragraph, you said [Character A] was [a location miles and miles away]. The conclusion of the scene is fantastic, though. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the next chapter!"

DA

Maybe, but speaking from personal experience what betas have given me as "concrit" is "change the entire structure of the fic when the structure was the point, because I prefer it better written in another way" (e.g. changing third person to first person, or changing the POV character entirely) or "change the theme of the fic because it's too humorous/dark right now" then accused me of being "thin skinned" and "not accepting crit" when I said no, that's just plain old not what I intended to do.

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I'm willing to take punishing crit when the crit helps make the story be better in what it's trying to be. Tear that shit apart to make it better at what it's meant to be! But lots of the crit I got was trying to change the story 180 away from what it was trying to be.

Lots of betas plain don't know how what being a beta means. It's not being an editor, though they sure like to think so.

Oh, please. One could say many of you are just as eager to believe in awful writers without iron clad proof. And I speak as someone who's given concrit that wasn't received well.

But I appreciate the example, anyway.
