I’m not even gonna lie, I enjoyed Dragon Ball Evolution. I love the Dragon Ball franchise, so I probably should’ve hated that movie, but I thought it was fun.

Netflix’s Death Note was pretty bad though. Willem Dafoe as Ryuk was awesome and the guy who played L was decent, but the rest was so bad and that Ferris wheel scene had me dying of laughter, which was probably not the intended effect.

Netflix Death Note was so-bad-it's-good for me

I completely unironically enjoyed Dragonball Evolution as well, it was just so stupid I ended up finding it hilariously fun. Definitely one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but fuck me was it a ride.

Did they at least cast asian actors otherwise??

I sort of enjoyed the (very bad) Netflix FMA adaptation. It made me ship Royed all over again! The wigs though. They were bad.

And I didn't hate the Netflix Bleach adaptation. Then again I think I would like anything with Byakuya Kuchiki in it.

You say Netflix adaptation - did Netflix actually come out with some shitty Americanized version of these like with Death Note, or just airing the Japanese live action movies?

nayrt

Apparently??!?!? Like I honestly think this is like the fifth one already??

I enjoyed that movie. I honestly don't get why people hated it.

Because casting Johannson as that character and how they wrote it was racist.

Was it, though? Having seen it it felt like the discomfort of being in a very different body from yours was...sort of the point? And I though the creator was in favor of her casting?

Though I must concede I only part of the manga, and I recall it being rather different.

In my opinion it was still a white person playing an Asian character, regardless. And the ending just made it worse. I'm not Japanese and can't speak for them, but from what I've seen a lot of actual Japanese people disliked it too.

Imo, if they do it with dire respect to the original character then it's generally fine. (after all you can cast a character out of race and have them master the role) So being white isn't so much a problem to me as a respectful representation.

The manga is completely totally divorced from any of the anime adaptations IIRC so IDK how useful that comparison is

It seems like a really inescapably Japanese character and series to me but IDK

I think a lot of people didn't like the movie because it reduced the core of what made gits great into a shallow imitation of what it is. Pretty endemic to Hollywood adaptations I suppose.
