It's because there's been years of the friendly, decent portions of the in-game community dipping a toe in the fandom and then backing the fuck away at great haste when met with the unreasonable assholes, to the point that public fandom is now pretty much assholes all the way down.

There are smaller, self-isolating pockets of sane fandom here and there, but you pretty much have to make friends with the right people to get access, because no one wants to be the one to let the aggressive shitweasels in.

Yep. The in-game community is great, I've met so many wonderful people there and even met up with a whole bunch of them in real life. I went to the last FanFest and had a fantastic time even though I was on my own for most of it because the rest of my FC didn't manage to get tickets. Everyone there was so nice and welcoming that I never felt lonely or left out.

It's so jarring to see the difference between that and the fandom portion.
