I also caught it on TV randomly without knowing a single thing about it, but in my case the transition from claustrophobia and dread to full on monster horror was absolutely masterful and literally couldn't have hit me harder.

But I'm the kind of horror fan who finds supernatural or preternatural horror a dozen times scarier than natural horror.

For me monster/supernatural horror can be hit on miss. I don't hate it, and some movies with those elements I have enjoyed greatly, but for the descent I was just so taken with the very real-feeling horror of dangerous caving that the monsters just ruined it for in like, 30 secs

Maybe if I had known beforehand that this movie had those elements as well I might have enjoyed the monsters too, a bit of a shame, really
