Wow, that was a useful reply. It totally absorbed the previous post and wasn't just talking at it, at all.

What else do you want me to say? You can't have effective third parties at the national level in a strong presidential system with first past the post voting. No matter how desirable third parties might be, it's not going to happen. You can have one party and a bunch of weak parties that don't accomplish anything except act as spoilers, or you can have two broad-based coalitional parties. Those are the choices.

For there to be effective third parties in the US, there would have to be a total redesign of the US electoral system first. Which is also very unlikely.

It has nothing to do with familiarity or fear of the unknown. It would be good in many ways to have third parties. It just doesn't work in the system the way its presently designed.
