I'm not that charitable, tbh. I keep thinking of when people actually tried this in the 90's with Haruka/Michiru and that Prince Uranus bullshit, and it was definitely for homophobic reasons then.

Femslash is, comparative to both slash and het, rare in fandom. It would feel very targeted, very intentional to genderswap a f/f pairing into m/f. And this is all hypothetical because I don't think I've ever seen it actually happen in modern fandom. I don't think people would take kindly to it.

I've seen people genderswap f/f pairings into m/m and vice versa (usually in cases where they're doing something like genderswapping the entire cast of something like Sailor Moon into guys), but I don't think I've seen anyone swap f/f into m/f either.

I do think people would yell about it a bit if somebody tried, though

NAYRT but I don't get what makes you so happy that f/f aren't being genderbent into m/f. To me it's like people are so lesbophobic AOL they're avoiding lesbian couples or ships altogether really. So why would they want to write it as a genderbent couple if they feel negatively about it to begin with? You know.

It does give me a little comfort that people would rather ignore something they hate rather than actively go in to de-gay it, if that's their intention. But I don't assume that f/f is unpopular because most people are lesbophobic.

AYRT
But why do you think they hate it if they actually like it, just can't relate to the lesbian aspect and would rather genderswap to something they identify with or feel more comfortable with?
I'm not really a fan of genderbent fanfiction in any way, usually, btw. But that's because I am not really a fan of the idea of gender in ANY way. I can see the appeal to some people though. In fiction, it doesn't bother me nearly as much as when people want to apply those gender roles to RL.

Well, it bothers me. Partly because f/f is closer to my own sexual identity and I can't help but feel targeted when those relationships are diminished, and partly because I think it's shitty to take away from something that's already underrepresented. And what am I supposed to take away from people saying they can't identify with, that they feel *uncomfortable* with the lesbian aspect of a relationship?

NAYRT--that they're attracted to men, read/write what gets them off, and they self insert/project themselves as one half of a pairing and want to imagine fucking/being in a relationship with the (male) other half, and not another woman?

Combine that with some women explicitly hating their own bodies (raises hand) and/or being jealous of or even triggered by descriptions of women who fit society's standards of beauty (when they don't--I don't, but for me imagining myself as a beautiful woman is wish fulfillment) or of women at all because it reminds them of experiences with assault, or hatred of common tropes that show up more in het than slash, and you get some (but not all and probably not a majority of) slash fans.

This isn't a dialogue about not shipping f/f, which is fine, or preferring m/m, which is also fine. This is specifically about what would compel someone to perform genderswap to make f/f pairings straight. This not only requires them to engage with the f/f ship (that doesn't appeal to them), but also requires them to fulfill their preference for male attraction by genderswapping one or both of the female characters.

Why on earth would anyone do this, when male characters of every type are overwhelmingly more present in fiction, and we're still struggling for good depictions of women on a good day? Now you're committing a doublewhammy of straightifying a lesbian ship AND taking away from female representation.

AND taking away from female representation.

This is the part that doesn't make sense to people with working logic circuits.

It's only "taking away" from something if it's replacing or removing that thing. It's fanfic. There's not a limit on how many there can be, so the genderswapped fic isn't going to take up a non-swapped fic's spot.

This really seems like one of those things that exclusion tags were invented for. You will never have to read another icky het fic again if you just exlude those tags from your fic search, nonny. And all the femslash will still be right where you left it, because people writing fic you don't like doesn't actually do anything to the fic you do like!
