I'd argue that knowing more about Mandalorians meant that Filoni was always going to introduce characters and story elements from clone wars and rebels. I'd assume as much after the intro of the darksaber at the end of S1.

I don't disagree that S2 was pretty much hype for the new shows, but given how honestly depressed the fandom was as a whole after the sequels it's not a bad thing.

If you went into mandalorian and just want reluctant bounty hunter!dad then I can see someone being disappointed in S2.

This is all I wanted from S2 and yes, I am super disappointed. I was hoping Grogu would tell Luke to fuck off and stay with Mando. And I can’t even find any good Dad and Som adventure fic because the Mandalorian tag on AO3 is full of Mando/Reader self-inserts.

I was hoping that Grogu stayed with Din as well, but it wouldn't have made much narrative sense if he did. I can't see where the show would have gone if it didn't break them up.

Sucks more cause if you consider the implications and how long lived grogu's species is, the possibility of Grogu having to go through two jedi purges is high. Makes you hate the sequels more. ;-;

DA - All I want from The Mandalorian is reluctant (slowly becoming less reluctant) bounty hunter!dad, and I preferred S2 to S1. Honestly, as someone who barely even knew what was being hyped at any given time, I found it a strong and engaging season. I feel like maybe this is a case where people who know more about the extended universe are actually being distracted by their sense of, "Oh hey, it's so-and-so. " By contrast, I, knowing almost nothing about the extended universe, found it easy to just take every story beat at face value. And at face value, it all worked--for me, anyway.

That's surprising you found the storyline engaging even without knowing the new characters and their backstories.

Objectively I thought S2 was weaker because it kind of needs you to know the background of the introduced characters to understand certain contexts and why they matter in the plot. Or at least it makes it more compelling if you do.
