It's hard to have it come up as plot relevant otherwise, innit

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has a no-regrets abortion subplot in S2!

But the character has a really bad time afterwards, which can be read as karmic punishment.

Yes, it would be great to have this breadth of experience better represented in media. I’m glad to see the examples people are sharing.

From experience working at a place that offered abortions, I know there is a wide range of reactions (both immediately and later on follow-up). Upset? Relieved? Unfazed? It’s all normal.

I agree with you 100% that the ubiquity of "I couldn't go through with it" abortion plotlines, or "I did go through with it but it was awful" abortion plotlines is downright rage-inducing. However, how abortion is represented in fictional media is slowly getting better.

BoJack Horseman, GLOW, and Sex Education all have main characters who have abortions and aren't wracked with guilt over it. Also, in S1 of Jessica Jones, Jessica procures an abortion pill for a girl, and is all, "I'm pretty sure this is the part where I'm supposed to ask you if you're s—" and the girl pops that pill like, "Oh thank fuck, get this pill in me and this parasite out of me." Of course, the circumstances in this case are extremely grim and probably even most hardline pro-lifers would be begging for that pill. But still, it counts as an instance of an abortion with zero hesitancy or guilt.

I really like how they showed the abortion in GLOW - it was very straight-forward and practical, little stress and definitely no angst.

Yeah, I loved it too. When it turned out she was pregnant I was like oh fuck no, because I HATE the way unplanned pregnancy in fiction is always treated like this huge crisis, oh the drama, whatever will she DO?? when there is, in fact, an obvious solution to the problem (depending on where and when you live, ofc). But then the show actually treated her unwanted pregnancy exactly the way I wish it was treated in fiction the majority of the time, and it was like, oh my god THANK YOU.

I always think of the abortion plot arc in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' which was totally realistic *as well as* totally not pandering to the pro-life/drama llama bullshite.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious, do you somehow think women should feel ashamed if they are deeply upset by having an abortion?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2021-01-21 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...........?
How did you get that?
I think that the *portrayal* of woman being deeply upset over having an abortion is overdone, cliche, and not very realistic in most of the situations they (tv/movie people) put it into.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-21 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually never seen it, but maybe I'll check it out. Thanks!

I see almost nothing but 'it was great!' representations of abortion in media, despite the increasing amount of research that shows it has devasting effects for many women.

Here's a good list (I don't always like focus on the family, but it's a good list; most pro-abortion groups won't publish anything negative): https://www.focusonthefamily.com/pro-life/abortion-complications/
