No one would, in good taste, make fun of someone who got kidnapped/murdered/raped. It's one thing to pass over the sad shit that happens every day and it's an entirely different thing to make light of it.

If someone is having fun in a way that the OP thinks is distasteful, then he/she has every right to say so.

That's making fun of someone. This is making fun of ideas and events. There's a difference between going "LOLOLOL YOU'RE A HOLOCAUST VICTIM!!!" to someone's face and "how big would the stick up nazi germany's ass be if the entire idea were a person?" just like there's a difference between going "HA-HA YOUR MOTHER GOT MURDERED" and "LOL AND THEN IN THE NEXT EPISODE SHE DIES LOL"

If we stopped laughing at everything that anyone found distasteful, what would we have to laugh at?

ETA: the point is, it's different levels of personal. Laughing at people dying in wars is one level, laughing at France always losing them is another. One is intended to be personal and the other is not. If people get all indignant and start taking everything personally when it isn't intended to be, they're going to be offended at anything they WANT to be offended at anyway, so there's no point in talking to them, is there?

Nope, what I was saying was, laughing at history is like laughing at the idea of murder, or using that as a basis for jokes/parodies/etc. No one IS laughing at the victims and making it personal like the OP is saying.

France only started losing wars very recently. They were the most powerful country in Europe and the world for a long time, but nobody realizes that because they don't care about historical events unless some Japanese guy draws a webcomic about it.

It matters to me a little (partly because I have French ancestry, partly because I majored in the subject). It doesn't really bother me if people don't care, I just wish they wouldn't pretend to care because of a stupid webcomic.
