The people you hear about getting murdered and kidnapped and raped on the news are real, immediate, feeling, emotional human beings who LIVED, too. Why don't you care about them? That's making fun of someone. This is making fun of ideas and events. There's a difference between going "LOLOLOL YOU'RE A HOLOCAUST VICTIM!!!" to someone's face and "how big would the stick up nazi germany's ass be if the entire idea were a person?" just like there's a difference between going "HA-HA YOUR MOTHER GOT MURDERED" and "LOL AND THEN IN THE NEXT EPISODE SHE DIES LOL"

If we stopped laughing at everything that anyone found distasteful, what would we have to laugh at?

ETA: the point is, it's different levels of personal. Laughing at people dying in wars is one level, laughing at France always losing them is another. One is intended to be personal and the other is not. If people get all indignant and start taking everything personally when it isn't intended to be, they're going to be offended at anything they WANT to be offended at anyway, so there's no point in talking to them, is there?

The OP is being way to harsh but I think s/he still has a point.

Afghanisu-tan's Moe-ification of 9/11 is way more out of line.
But to be honest, Hetalia fans shouldn't be seeing themselves as so so much higher on the moral high ground either.

(As for personal thoughts on yaoi, I'm much more uncomfortable with Afghanisu-tan but Hetalia and it's fans vitriolic defensiveness bugs me too. I will also admit to being oversensitive. )

I think part of the reason why fans are so defensive (I know this is case for me, at any rate), is not so much the fact that people are offended, because most if not all of us realize why they might feel that way, but the fact that a lot of secrets, especially the first few, were attacking the fandom and making very broad, offensive assumptions about everyone involved in it. Aside from the normal reaction of 'Wtf, I'm not like that! You don't know me, dude.', I think another think that got to people is the fact that for many of us, Hetalia is the nicest, friendliest, least wank-y fandom we've ever been involved with and the fact that people think it's crazy and racist and terrible is really kind of... disheartening. I mean, I've been in Harry Potter fandom for years, so I'm used to just shrugging and admitting that there are batshit people in my fandom and letting it go. But for some reason, it just feels more personal with Hetalia. Idk.

Anyway, sorry for the lame TL;DR. I just thought I'd put that out there. orz

That shit isn't funny, especially when there are still living individuals whose lives were ruined by those events. (Before he met me, my husband dated a Chinese-American girl whose father fought in WWII and actually killed about a dozen Japanese soldiers.) And even if Hetalia isn't offensive it's still badly drawn, unfunny and it sucks.

I think a lot of the hatesecrets come from the fact that people are exposed to things like the kinkmeme first, and as a Hetalia fan, I find a big chunk of the kinkmeme incredibly offensive. There's a huge middle ground between saying you hate the entire series and saying that Hetalia is 100 percent historically accurate or that you're a-okay with the Rape of Nanking being written as NC-17 noncon because some idiot found the concept hot. It's like - guys, there really is middle ground.
