The OP is being way to harsh but I think s/he still has a point.

Afghanisu-tan's Moe-ification of 9/11 is way more out of line.
But to be honest, Hetalia fans shouldn't be seeing themselves as so so much higher on the moral high ground either.
Not when they have scenes such as this:

(As for personal thoughts on yaoi, I'm much more uncomfortable with Afghanisu-tan but Hetalia and it's fans vitriolic defensiveness bugs me too. I will also admit to being oversensitive. )

This anon knows it can't speak for all Americans, but this anon wasn't bothered by the "Moe-ification of 9/11."

This New Yorker anon didn't find it offensive either.

This American non-anon wasn't bothered either.

Holy run-on sentence, Batman!

I think part of the reason why fans are so defensive (I know this is case for me, at any rate), is not so much the fact that people are offended, because most if not all of us realize why they might feel that way, but the fact that a lot of secrets, especially the first few, were attacking the fandom and making very broad, offensive assumptions about everyone involved in it. Aside from the normal reaction of 'Wtf, I'm not like that! You don't know me, dude.', I think another think that got to people is the fact that for many of us, Hetalia is the nicest, friendliest, least wank-y fandom we've ever been involved with and the fact that people think it's crazy and racist and terrible is really kind of... disheartening. I mean, I've been in Harry Potter fandom for years, so I'm used to just shrugging and admitting that there are batshit people in my fandom and letting it go. But for some reason, it just feels more personal with Hetalia. Idk.

Anyway, sorry for the lame TL;DR. I just thought I'd put that out there. orz

That shit isn't funny, especially when there are still living individuals whose lives were ruined by those events. (Before he met me, my husband dated a Chinese-American girl whose father fought in WWII and actually killed about a dozen Japanese soldiers.) And even if Hetalia isn't offensive it's still badly drawn, unfunny and it sucks.

I think a lot of the hatesecrets come from the fact that people are exposed to things like the kinkmeme first, and as a Hetalia fan, I find a big chunk of the kinkmeme incredibly offensive. There's a huge middle ground between saying you hate the entire series and saying that Hetalia is 100 percent historically accurate or that you're a-okay with the Rape of Nanking being written as NC-17 noncon because some idiot found the concept hot. It's like - guys, there really is middle ground.

Well, that's not what squicks me. It's more like the entire concept of Hetalia that bothers me more than specific subject matter. I see it as trivializing something that's important to me.

Re: diff. anon

[identity profile] stapledolphin.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Chinese-Canadian myself, with many living family members whom lived through WWII, and I feel sick when I think of some of the stuff they had to go through. This stuff is important to me too. Yet, I'm a Hetalia fan who thinks this series is great, funny, and decently drawn. I'm even fine with how the manga portrayed the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. You can judge me as a hypocrite or whatever, but the truth is that I just don't find Hetalia trivializing. It's fairly accurate in its history, and to me it doesn't make fun of all the deaths and horrors that occurred so much as briefly going over events while poking fun at all the quirks the countries have. "Trivializing" to me is something like Canadian history textbooks understating the discrimination Canada's given to its minorities in its past, or Japanese textbooks renaming "The Nanking Massacre" to "The Incident of Nanking" or leaving it out entirely. Whatever offensiveness Hetalia has doesn't even register on the radar for me in comparison to those things. Really, I don't understand how people can be so bothered by a manga.

tl;dr - what you're saying is really a matter of opinion. (And that's fine with me! People are free to dislike what they want, but I wish they didn't act as if the fans are all insensitive asses, or were so holier-than-thou about it.)

Re: diff. anon

[identity profile] imnotasquirrel.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Hetalia is offensive as well (although for the record I never thought about asking for it to be cancelled). I'm Korean, and my grandparents were greatly affected by Japan. Considering the history between Japan and Korea (and the current controversy over alleged revisionist history going on today), I think Korea's depiction is rather problematic. Yes, I understand that it's a parody. But it's like the n-word in the United States. There is just a WHOLE lot of emotional baggage that comes with the terrain, and it's not easily glossed over by virtue of the show being a parody.

That said, I make no assumptions about Hetalia fans in general. I was just over at the Hetalia LJ community and it seems like the vast majority of fans are great people. And the mods are awesome. So...yeah. I may hate the anime, but hold no grudge against the fans and make no generalizations about what sort of people the fans are. I'm entitled to my opinions, and so are they.
