113 DO IT!!

142 You've got to be fucking kidding me.

144 Ugh, people like you should just shut the fuck up already. Stop accusing other women of being sexist/not caring enough about women. I mean, do you even read your own fucking secrets before you post them?

145 That's like saying that a compilation of a certain type of music trumps the individual musicians or the whole genre. I mean, each one of those shorts was so indicative of the people that directed/worked on them that you might as well just watch the actual anime they produced.

146 Me too, LOL

158 "In fact, thanks to Hetalia, I'm actually a little more aware of other countries besides my own now." Congratulations, that's the stupidest fucking thing I've heard all day. Am I the only one who paid attention in geography in middle school? Am I the only person who even had geography in public school? Am I the only one who actually cared about this shit without having to have some badly drawn unfunny webcomic come along and make me aware of it?

And I'm more offended by the idea of oversimplifying history into something that's supposed to be cute and adorable than by someone just making fun of historical events. The latter happens all the time. (For example, the Family Guy joke you referenced didn't try to make slavery into this cute squeeable subject.)

162 Whatever, I rip off character designs all the time. Not always from manga/anime but sometimes.

170 OH MY GOD FUTURE BOY CONAN aka the greatest thing Miyazaki has ever done! I love that anime, it's one of my absolute favorite cartoons ever. I haven't seen any of those others though, besides Maya the Bee (as it was called on Nickelodeon, anyway).

172 I'm not following you. How is it magical realism?

185 As a history graduate, I think it's detrimental to get too emotionally invested in past events. I just hate Hetalia because I think the subject of history deserves better. I don't mind historical humor but to boil historical events down into something that's supposed to be cute is just lame.

158. You had a decent geography class? Every single one I've ever heard of in my area was taught by an asshole football coach who didn't know what the hell he as talking about.

On a better point, being aware of the physical exisitence =/= being *aware* that those cultures exist and that they are very, very real. Most people need more than a high school education to realize that. At the very least, they need some kind of book - and a comic is really no different in that extent.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
In the 7th grade I had a Geography class taught by a woman who was born in Lebanon (daughter of Christian missionaries). She made us draw maps and we actually discussed the general culture of different regions, and did projects on specific countries. Also, this was during the Balkans War in the 90s so the map of Europe kept changing. It was really confusing to 12-13 year olds trying to understand why there was a war in the first place (which we heard very little about in the media).

Anyway, I kind of get what you're saying, but I just find it funny that people can't get interested in world geography and history on their own, without being spurred by a webcomic.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Why is that funny? I mean, it's a little sad, but only in virtue of the fact that it's extremely common. That's why people invent learning aids, and educators often seek ways to make learning fun. Sure, folks will gravitate towards their personal fields of interest of their own volition, but if you want to expand beyond that, you need to have a hook. And you do need to, because a lot of the time people wouldn't know that they like something until they have a positive encounter with it, would they?

Should it really be that puzzling that people who are possibly unlike you in every way do not hold the same level of interest for a certain field as you? Maybe they don't want to be historians, maybe they just want to know enough to get through a cocktail conversation.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not saying that they shouldn't like it, I'm just stating my dislike for it. Also, I would rather that people didn't profess a love for history if it's based solely on a webcomic, just like a physics major would probably be annoyed if I said I really loved physics just because I watch Beakman's World (remember that show?)

I'm not talking about people who want to "get through a cocktail conversation," I'm talking about the people who post secrets about how they are so into history now that they read Hetalia.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm in engineering, but come on now, that's just crazy! Personally, I wouldn't lose my shit over someone telling me that they think science can be pretty cool after watching, I don't, Bill Nye, any more than I think you should be angry that people are discovering history through Hetalia. Obviously, I'd have to ask if they're serious about it and want to pursue those interests further, but if they aren't serious, then at least they care more now then they did before, right?

Sounds to me like you have this deep conviction that the Hetalia fan community is full of self-proclaimed historical scholars who use the comic as their primary source material, when actually it's made up of history majors, people who think they might want to be history majors, and some others who don't give a shit about history one way or another. And you know what, that's okay. Because it's a fan community. For a Japanese webcomic.

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it is kinda funny, but that's humanity for you. ^_^ Everybody's got their trigger for that sort of thing, you know? For some, it's the introduction to a peice of foriegn culture, like a cartoon series or novel; for others, it's a clip on the news, and for others, a webcomic. I mean, it's not like people can adjust their 'trigger.' It just takes something that resonates with them you know? ^_^

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Some people can, some people can't. It doesn't make them any less speshul than you.

They may have other areas of interest which bore you to tears. Physics, marine biology, Latin, plumbing, mechanics, chemistry, English, philosphy, art and a whole host of other subjects.

I'm not going to sit here and pity the history students who hated science and found it boring. And I don't think anyone needs to be condescended to by you because they didn't know of the existence of Sealand.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
If there were a webcomic making fun of the hard sciences, I'd be all over it. Come on, you guys, there is so much more you can do with physics than mocking the LHC.

Maybe xkcd should be a little less irreverent...

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
By less, of course I mean more. [palm]

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
D: But the LHC is so funny.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (so what?)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find the existence of Sealand important! That's exactly why I hate Hetalia, because it just feeds people trivial facts about history and they think they're really learning something. That's not what history is about. History is about understanding why things happen the way that they do. It's about recognizing trends and being able to draw parallels between different events. It's about understanding how common people did everyday things in a different time. Those are the things history is really about, not knowing the existence of some stupid principality that sells titles for $20 over the internet.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
The people who think they're learning a lot of stuff from Hetalia are no different than the people who walk into Hollywood-produced movies based on historical events and walk out thinking that they know something. It's just the way many people are regardless of what they're looking at, so I feel it's best to dislike the fact that many people take historically based entertainment as absolute fact rather than the series utilizing said history itself. From the very beginning it's really never done anything BUT feed people trivial facts about history and it will likely continue to do so until the Japanese dude writing it gets tired of making four-panel comics about pinky-swear pacts and how potatoes are eaten in France. Nothing new on the Hetalia front, but plenty new in how fans interpret it and the events it (badly) portrays.

Not everyone cares about how history should be studied anyway. As a history student, it's important to me in the same way that it's important to you. And I definitely agree with you. Yet still, your definition of what 'history is about' may differ completely from any other history student's or professor's definition, and it sure as hell is going to be different from the definitions of people who didn't care enough about WWII or anything else to learn about it until Hetalia came along. It's frustrating, sure, but Hetalia is just one blip in a long line of media equally guilty of doing the same thing, and surely there will be worse to come. There's just no way to force people into looking at things from a different perspective regardless of what history means to you, me, or anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the "history" actually comes from the fans, whether it be in fanfic, fanart, etc. and this is where you usually get more indepth and insightful views on historical events. Basically, for the majority of fans, this is where our nerdiness comes out.

The webcomic itself though isn't meant to be taken as some sort of textbook for people to learn from. It's all just for fun, really and nobody's claiming any different. :/ I mean, it's dumb if people take it seriously and honestly start believing everything they read, on the other hand it's dumb to reprimand people for taking an interest history that they otherwise would not have had.

Basically, you don't have to like it, but you don't take it as a personal attack either.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Sealand isn't presented as important, it's presented precisely because it's so ridiculous. He's presented as a little kid who keeps trying to get the other nations to take him seriously. And even learning about seemingly trivial facts is still learning. But there may be other countries that people learn about, or haven't heard of before (or have forgotten about, because it wasn't really important to their everyday lives and/or study.)

Most people know about the big things already, but they don't know the little things, especially in countries where their own history spans centuries and centuries and encompassed a good chunk of the world (I have seen some fellow Americans getting all huffy and offended about the fact that English students weren't taught in detail about the American civil rights movement!). In cases like this, someone is going to have to do some cherry picking even for those official history classes.

The problem is, people seem to be taking Hetalia as a step by step humorous retelling of WWII. It's not, it's little different than a comic strip in a newspaper, referring to various little snippets of history/culture/opinions here and there, and it isn't even just about WWII and it isn't always funny.

It's accessible to people who were never really good at history and people who are. So many fans have used a four panel strip as a jumping point to learn something more about History, and I'm failing to see WHY you consider this a bad thing. Not everybody is a history or geography graduate, nor should everybody be one. People learn in different ways. Some people are good at learning from dry old history texts, others aren't. Some people learn better through a more practical approach, others don't. Some find it easier to use humor, others don't. I just don't understand why you get to be the the one who decides exactly how and why everyone should learn some History and Geography and exactly what every one should be offended by?

I'm not saying you have to like it, or even not to be offended, but I think you need to let go of this 'holier than thou' attitude to towards those who do, or those who feel they have learned something because of Hetalia or the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
What!? 'Holier than thou?' Don't be riduculous, everyone who takes history seriously is in 100% agreement with [livejournal.com profile] childings and everything they say. We wouldn't be real history majors or enthusiasts otherwise! Their word is law and you best get used to it. It would simply make far too much sense for them to do something like...not comment about a series they hate on nearly every single thread regarding it on a livejournal community.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't get so irrationally angry over Hetalia. If it doesn't mean anything to you, it doesn't, so you're only making yourself more miserable by constantly fueling your hate for it.

Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae. - Kurt Vonnegut

They're all linked in that they were created specifically for this project and have the same theme- thus they are meant to be viewed together as a whole. I understand what you mean though. It's just that when all is said and done, I'd still rather watch Robot Carnival than anything else. It had a huge impact on me as a young girl just getting into anime (and yes, I have seen it recently; it's not one of those situations where my memory glorifies it when in reality I haven't watched it since I was eight).
