May I recommend Nirvana in Fire?
There is a tiny bit of focus on romance in the beginning (but that has other reasons), but it practically vanishes after the first arc (which it isn't the focus of, just a side plot).
I don't like romance and it's one of my most favorite shows.

Seconding this rec, as I was also going to suggest this show. It seems right up your alley.

Thirding this. Nirvana in Fire is amazing, although first episode can easily leave you confused just don't give up!! The show is the most rewarding watch I can think of.

I was just coming to rec this...

Nirvana in Fire sounds like what OP's looking for. Romance is one minor aspect of it, the majority of the show focuses on political conflict. Not so much martial conflict, but it's well written and a good slow burn plot.

You might also try Rise of the Phoenixes, which does have romance at its center and at the end (or so I understand) but there's a LOT of political plotting. I didn't like it as much as NiF and thought the pacing and writing wasn't as good, but many people enjoyed it for that reason.

I also really enjoyed Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, which starts off as being somewhat episodic but the second half blossoms into a story arc about a kingdom-wide conspiracy. It's a BL adaptation and there's a brief handwaving attempt at providing a plausible love interest for one of the male leads, but it doesn't go anywhere. Lots of cute found family moments and some humor, so it's not as serious as the other two I mentioned.

I read the secret, immediately scrolled down to rec NiF - and really had to laugh, my god.

This is sorta the reason why I can't do Asian dramas despite being Asian. LOL Majority of the shows are romance heavy or just really soapy which can feel redundant to me.

May I recommend The Lost Tomb/Ultimate Note/Sound of Providence series?

Lots of tomb-raiding shenanigans, found family, weird dips into historical politics and intrigue, humour...

I haven't seen Ultimate Note, yet, but in general the central relationships are platonic (and v. sweet).

No, we can't.
You could try censored BL, they usually have friendships. Lang Ya Bang for example.

May I suggest:

The Longest Day In Changan
Six Flying Dragons - a kdrama but very complex and plotty.

Why do people commonly rec kdramas when somebody talks about c/t/jdramas? No offense, I'm just wondering. I love kdramas too, and they have a quite different feel to them than, say, cdramas. It'd be like reccing someone a police show when they asked for shows about doctors.

i have no idea if it's subbed, but zhen huan zhuan is absolutely amazing.

I enjoyed Pili Fantasy: War of Dragons, which does have romance, but among quite a few other plot lines and the only serious bit of it is near the end of the season

I can't recommend it without that caveat that while the puppetry is extremely skilled (some aspects of making the characters move are actually fairly similar to muppetry) they are near-static doll faces, not fuzzy and expressive in the face.

(The puppeteers are skilled enough to have made a character in another show vibrate in rage at proper puppet scale but also sometimes they'll just throw the whole thing if that's what gets the shot)
